We visited the Observatory as an excursion organised by my daughter's kindergarten. The Observatory is located near Sovereign Hill and has a number of displays relating to the site's long history. There were several modern telescopes to look through, which provided excellent views of the...More

We went to see astronomical photos as part of the International Photo Biennale but fell in love with the history and character of this public observatory (the oldest in Victoria). An interesting site with some marvellous historical equipment and records. The staff on duty were...More

We did the evening tour and viewing at the Ballarat Observatory a few weeks ago and it was terrific. Our host was very animated and excited by the whole thing, we could tell he liked his job. The night was fairly clear so we were...More

Very impressed with the knowledge of both staff we met. Very friendly as well. The children loved it. Except that in summer, the sun sets late, and by the time we finished, it was past 10pm and the weather was chilly.

The highlight of the night was definitely the presenter. He was clearly passionate about astronomy, and science in general, and his passion was contagious. Every question or comment was valued and some great discussions took place.

We visited the observatory at night in order to look at stars/planets etc but we're disappointed in the quality of the viewing and thought it would be more interesting, the street lights ruined the experience as it seems it's set on a small property!

I've been to this observatory at least 7 times over the last few years and it is without a doubt my favourite attraction in Ballarat, and the best viewing at an observatory anywhere in Victoria! The staff and volunteers go out of their way to...More
