My recommendations: 1. Google first then try to spot "The Pioneer" painting by Frederick McCubbin (arguably the most visited painting in Australia? e.g. The golden statue of Johann Strauss in Vienna is the most photographed in Austria?). 2. Arthur Streeton, 3. Tom Roberts. 4. Arthur...More

This museum has an excellent collection of Australian Art. At the time we visited, it also had several really good special exhibits, including one on the sculpture of Ken Unsworth, which I highly recommend if it's still there.

A great mix of old and new. Well set out with areas for children to play and comfortable spots to stop and rest up. Cafe offers a great selection of food.

What a treat! Art was amazing - diverse and very unique. We went on a Wednesday. No charge for the many of the exhibits. A delight. Plan to spend about 2-3 hours without the special exhibition halls.

Australian art is under appreciated because of our obsession with European and American artists with bigger names. We have some great examples at the NGV International which also brings in some exceptional travelling exhibitions. Do yourself a favour, though, and embrace the difference by visiting...More

city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques,
throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You
never quite know what you’ll find around the next
corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and
even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air

No, both the galleries in Melbourne have free access if you want to come in and wander around their standard displays. If there are special exhibitions running, there is generally a charge for those. You can still enter... More
