Melbourne Gaol was a fantastically scary experience. I attended the night show, which runs for around an hour, and was very impressed. The tour is taken by a actor who plays the part of a prison guard at the gaol in the early 1900's. You...More

A review of two halves. The Gaol is interesting, thought provoking and well presented. The small displays in the cells, as well as the bigger ones on the landings give a real insight into the grim reality of 19th & 20th Century criminal justice, without...More

We had a day to kill in Melbs and decided to check this out as it was near our accommodation. We didn't get a chance to do the old police station experience because we were too caught up at the gaol itself. The experience inside...More

My 10yr old loved learning about the history of the jail and it's notorious inmates like Ned Kelly. He enjoyed seeing the small cells and hearing the stories of the convicts. It's a really well kept building and you can feel the history within it....More

The place is not really impressive as you could expect but it helps you have an idea of what is was to be a prisionersome years ago. Being an European it is not as our Castles, Dungeons, etc, from the Midlle Ages but it's OK...More

A lot of history and interesting data throughout in the original cells. The "death masks" are somewhat intimidating and haunting but a reminder of how different things were back in those days.

This is worth visiting. It is both forbidding and interesting. As well as the gaol itself with all the cells there is a lot of photographs and deathmasks of past criminals. There is also a “Crime and Justice Experience” where visitors are put through the...More

This tour is very entertaining, especially the Watch Tour. Your are greeted by a tough cop who puts you through the procedures when you get arrested. Might be a bit scary for young kids, but a fun experience.

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways
tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary
feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the
city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques,
throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You
never quite know what you’ll find around the next
corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and
even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air

Not really appropriate for young children. They would need to be old enough to appreciate the history of this Gaol and have some understanding of penal institutions in general. Not a cheerful, place.

You have to telephone the Gaol or check out the website for night tours, they have three and they run on different nights. I think they release the nights and times up to 2 weeks before. These are different to the day tours.
