About
This true replica of the historic huts in Cape Denison - Antarctica - constructed in 1911 by the men of the Australian Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr Douglas Mawson. Constructed by heritage architects and builders, the replica was only made possible by a federal government grant and the generosity of many Tasmanian businesses and individuals who donated time, goods and goodwill. As a part of the Mawson's Huts Foundation, all profits are toward the conservation of the historic huts, located in Cape Denison, Antarctica. Run by staff and volunteers, it is a step back in time to the "Heroic age" of Antarctic exploration and gives you a fascinating insight into the life of these Antarctic pioneers. The museum is well set up for groups as well as individual visits. Private tours are available on request. We also have a wonderful gift shop with unique items. We look forward to welcoming you. ** Please note due to current COVID restrictions our opening hours may have changed **

Worth a look

Only a small exhibition but is excellent. The volunteers on hand were amazing. They were able to answer all of our questions. Is a great insight into Hardships of our early explorers.

Surprisingly interesting trip through an underappreciated chapter of Australian History
Nov 2021 • Solo
Went here with one parent about a year ago. Today I dragged along the other.

This museum is a wonderful view into a really underexplored part of Australian history. Growing up, I only ever really learnt about Mawson as some guy who explored Antarctica in the distant past. Some sort of quaint eccentric who just happened to do something (I wasn't sure what) on an iceberg in the middle of nowhere.

The remarkably well curated exhibit dissuaded me of that notion. The volunteers there are clearly passionate about preserving this chapter of Australian history, and the story of their expedition is quite something.

Might not be great for non-English speakers (because some of the information slides are quite dense) - but overall a really well balanced museum that is easily one of the best value for money tourist experiences in Tasmania.

A must see when in Hobart.
Jul 2021
In looking at it from the outside, I thought, how good would it be and would it be worth it. I didn't think it would be any good. When we got there, it was being locked up. The man who worked there said we would need 30 mins to look at it.
We came back the next day to have a look. It cost $10 each for adults.
The lady working behind the counter was really good and informative. Again, due to Covid restrictions, it was empty. This was good as being the exact same size as the real Mawson's hut, it was quite cozy.
To my surprise, I really enjoyed the museum. It had some really great exhibits in it and really interesting facts about Mawson's expedition's. When we got into the main room, there was another volunteer (a lady) who was amazing and gave us some really great stories / insights into life at the station and the conditions the team faced. This really made the tour as it bought life to the exhibits.
Hopefully when you visit, you will have the same people we had and get the same information we got.
A really great museum, well worth the money and time.

Fascinating

I had walked past this a couple of times heading to the docks, and finally decided to visit. A small entry fee gets you access to a fascinating insight to living & working in Antartica.

Very well done

Fantastic Museum - great for kids
Jun 2021
Took kids 8yo and 9yo to museum on 29 June. Was a great experience with replica hut and original items. Excellent tour guide who answered questions and was very knowledgeable. Entry fees fund original building. Kids loved walking around hut and looking at items. Zip was a hit.

A great piece of Antarctica history!
Jun 2021
I am so glad I spotted the Masson hut. The lovely volunteers let me have a quick look as it was near closing time. I did get a quick intro from 1 of them. It is incredible how the men would have lived in the harsh environment. The history is fascinating and lots of memorabilia contained in the hut. I found the visit very informative.
Well worth a visit as donations support restoration of the actual hut in Antarctica.

Great visit! The staff & volunteers here were fantastic! Had a wonderful Pre-talk before going in, all the way down to the wood used to build the hut and why and interesting facts on the boat and what they took down to Antartica, amazing bit of history and such a great replica, makes you want to visit the real thing.Thank you to the staff/volunteers for sharing their passion and knowledge on the hut!
