About
With spectacular views over Coober Pedy, the Big Winch has been a popular attraction and meeting place for visitors and locals since it was built by Claus Wirries in the early 1970’s. Claus was an opportunistic man who had an eye for things that would appeal to visitors. Pictures of his trademark bowler hat and the dachshunds who had their own dugout kennel must feature in travel diaries around the world. Claus was a man of vision, a persuasive man who helped many people but he over-reached and, in the end, had make a quick departure from town. The Steel Tree The steel tree on the hill overlooking the town with the Big Winch was created by Bob Amorosi to give his kids the experience of a tree in a town that, at that time, had no trees. The twisted metal used to construct the tree, resulting from a freight truck fire around 200km south of Coober Pedy.

Some interesting displays outside and inside. Unfortunately the surround video system wasn't working at the time we visited.

The lookout at the Winch provides an excellent overview of this interesting town and surrounding moonscape with unending heaps of spoil.

We ate here a few nights in a row as we couldn't get enough of the atmosphere and the views. The food is good and the location superb.

The views are mesmerizing, best time to visit is sunrise when you can wind down with some drinks and nibbles after a days of Coober pedy city tour

Great views of Coober Pedy up here. It is free to get in and you can get a nice meal also. There is a small opal store and souvenir shop inside. The lookout outside has the Big Wench and other interesting pieces to look at. Would definitely recommend coming here.

If you want to see a 360 degree view of Coober Pedy this is the place to go. No payment is needed and the viewing area is accessible up a slight ramp,

We decided to see this winch more for the look-out of Coober Pedy and it was good to see the area and the breakaways in the distance... Not much to do up there as 360 was closed but we still enjoyed our visit. It really needs a bit of a spruce up so do not expect too much.

Not the best viewpoint or photo op, try welcome to CB sign at sunset instead. Remnants of derelict shops and exhibition centre up here. Shows that the place is losing steam.
