About
Strathnairn Arts is a not for profit arts association supported by the ACT Government providing working spaces, studios and facilities for a range of artists, crafts people and community groups. In addition to the Arts Galleries, you will find a SHOP and cafe set in a 1920's rural homestead on 9.5 hectares on the Western fringe of Belconnen overlooking the Brindabellas. Strathnairn Arts has been used by artists for decades but still remains one of Canberra's best kept secrets.

Noisy but nice
Oct 2020 • Couples
We went to the cafe for lunch, we rang ahead to book and were asked to arrive before noon. We were the first to be seated. We ordered and two excellent coffees soon arrived. Its a lovely space however the wooden floors make the building very noisy once other diners arrive.

The food was excellent vegetarian fare, I had a hummus platter an my wife had a filo parcel filled with middle eastern spiced potato. The ingredients were very fresh and were of high quality.

The snake identification chart near the Covid registration desk at the front door is a bit off putting and an artist from the complex advised us there were snakes in the area and to stick to the paths.

I am somewhat snake-phobic but i would happily return to this excellent, somewhat out of the way, cafe.

Thank you for visiting Strathnairn Arts and Cafe Stepping Stone, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit. Because of our semi rural location we do need to be aware of our wildlife, including snakes especially in warmer weather, when walking around the property. Thank you for taking care, we hope to see you again!

A hidden gem
Mar 2018 • Solo
Strathnairn Art Gallery is situated in miles of open country. I saw kangaroos and there are horses in a nearby field. But this place houses studios where artists work in clay, paint, cast iron and wool , to name a few materials. The gallery houses exhibitions and there is a shop and café staffed by world's friendliest people. What a find!

Great lunch

We had the vege stack and the beef stack at the cafe. Both very tasty. Also real chai steaming hot. A lovely place to eat and then a wander looking at the gallery and surrounding land. Visit before it is swamped by the new development and looses its feeling of being in the country.

Cultural island
Sep 2017 • Couples
The historic and cultural iconic Strathnairn homestead is a island in the new Ginindery development. The original gallery and working studios are to be kept intact during and after the massive housing estate developments. Strathnairn is part of the green corridor all the way down to the Murrumbidgee. The gallery of local artists and cafe well become increasingly valuable sanctuary in a modern estate.

Finally Southasian pot tea and fantastic brekkie
Sep 2016 • Friends
I was pleasantly suprised as most western style cafes don't serve the traditional south asian tea brewed in a pot with milk and sugar. Also I was there on fathers day, without a booking, but the staff were really kind and let us sit on the porch.
This is a lovely location, nestled beautifully just a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of belconnen town and kippax.
We had the salmon with poached eggs, higly recommend that for a good brekkie.

If it is a beautiful day sit outside in front of the gallery.

Secret attraction must visit
Jul 2016 • Friends
A group of us visited the Art Gallery on the most windy, rainy day possible - however the warm reception from curator gladened our spirits. Current exhibition most interesting from students aged 60+ - vibrant colours, misty intrigues, abstracts. Then the Gallery Cafe for lunch - nice and warming in front of open fire. Am now anxious to return to see all the artists working in their own little cottages, spaces. Recommend highly.

This is my local gallery as I live in the closest suburb, it's delightful to have quality art at my doorstep. We purchased several unique and practical wedding gifts and enjoyed supporting local artists.

Leisurely pleasure
May 2016 • Couples
It's best to visit Strathnairn on a fine day for a fantastic outlook over the Brindabella mountains. This very active and popular arts enclave is slightly out of the way at the back of Holt, so a vehicle of some sort is required unless you live nearby -- parking and access to the picturesque grounds are easy, however. Somehow the Strathnairn property has survived the depredations of real-estate developers, although I understand suburbia is set to encroach on the homestead. In the meantime, it's a great place for families to visit; with plenty of outdoor space dotted with sculptures and intriguing nooks and crannies -- such as an uprooted tree which makes a neat climbing frame for little kids. There are many artists in residence of all persuasions (who are friendly and patient with curious onlookers), and much machinery, so kids' supervision is a must. The whole is very well maintained: facilities include a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and well-priced food -- the caramelized apple cake was good, and coffee was huge -- a retail space where artists display their work, artists' workspaces scattered over the property, and three sets of clean toilet blocks. There is truly something to interest everyone, particularly on the Open Days, but also check for special events.
