Compared to other beaches along the Alagoas State coastline, Pontal do Peba may not seem that attractive, but it makes a good base if you´re visiting southern Alagoas. This is a quiet fisherman's village and one can take long nice strolls along the beach here as the sand is hard and good for walking. There are not too many houses along the beach and if you´re fit you can walk from one beach to the other (most of them unspoilt) and isolated). There's also a buggy tour that crosses the southern part of Peba beach 20 miles down to the mouth of the mighty São Francisco river. This is a protected area and only authorized cars are allowed. On top of that you can take a motor boat tour of the river, go parasailing, fishing or simply take a long retreat at one of the local pousadas. Also don´t miss the VIP Restaurant by the beach that serves good inexpensive food.

When we arrived at the busstation of Piaçabuçu, half an hour and 3Rs away from Penedo, a runner of one of the boat tour companies catched us and led us to the riverfront. 40Rs would have been the price for 3,5 hours. Probably a bit overpriced. In the boat we informed what a local had to pay. 35Rs and we managed to get that price too.

The boat trip is comfortable, the river being quiet. We were dropped off for one hour at the beach and could swim a bit in the river, Entirely fresh water. Then the shipper brought us to the place where river and sea meets and we returned. This second half lasted longer as we were going up the river.

Brazilians are absolutely mad about this kind of stuff. Dozens of cans of beer were opened during the trip. The volume of the conversations becoming higher and higher. Eating different kinds of snacks and all of the time taking pictures of themselves in the boat or on the beach in ever changing positions and combinations.
Brazil is not only world champion futebol, but probably also world champion obesitas.

Piaçabuçu is (at first sight) a not so interesting place, if compared with Penedo. And the boat trip (without any information about the river, the place or the people, except for 2 pictures from earlier days) is nothing special too.

The beach is beautiful, even on a closed and rainy day. The water is warm... but two things get in the way... the large amount of rubbish, especially cans and bottles... and the number of vehicles of all types and motorbikes traveling at high speed across the sand... it's scary!

Beautiful beach. Beautiful dunes. What's sad is the amount of trash on the beach! Plastic bags. Garbage etc. If the locals would clean up the trash I'd give this beach 5 stars. It is isolated with minimal infrastructure which in my book is a plus.

Beautiful beach, I had a lot of fun until I was attacked by a caravel and spent an hour and a half waiting for the school parade to finish so they could open the only exit available in the city.
