Overview
More
This picturesque fortified mansion was built for Lord Hastings, who was dramatically seized and executed by Richard III in 1483. Hastings’ descendants still believe they have a direct line to the throne of England. Explore the atmospheric moated remains, the fine gatehouse, and complete corner tower of this brick-built mansion, which have been extensively conserved by English Heritage. Make it part of an enjoyable family day out in Leicestershire with a picnic in the grounds or take a walk around the moat.

Interesting ruined ‘castle’ which was never completed. A bench or two would have been appreciated around the site.

Just how a castle should be and although a ruin you can access first and partial second floor for great views of site and moat. Bird life as well, with a heron feeding from the moat. Helpful warden on site. Works well if you visit...More

Whilst stopping in Kirby Muxloe I noticed a sign for the castle. Built in the 15th century it’s set within its own moat with trees running around the perimeter. A very pretty castle that was sadly never finished, now popular with fishermen it seems. If...More

I’ve been here a few times now but this was the first for some years. I’d forgotten how much I liked it. We were driving to London and stopped for a picnic as it was a warm sunny day. It’s a really nice spot -...More

Having visited Ashby castle several times we thought we'd take a trip to Kirby Muxloe too as it features in the same guidebook. As it is quite small there are not many facilities (though we did notice cold drinks on sale) and it is only...More

I changed upon this location about 0830hrs on a summer morning. No entrance fee, none around - I thought. The heat from the rising sun was burning of the mist above the moat. It was utterly quiet and still and I became aware of a...More

I saw Kirby Muxloe Castle in an English Heritage hand-book and being nearby, I visited. Situated in the centre of quite an attractive village, the castle; (actually the ruins of a moated Manor House) with its moat complete and much of the entrance to the...More

Came here on Sunday with friends who live quite close but hadn’t visited before. What a stunning little castle! £5 for a adult to enter think that’s good but shouldn’t be anymore as for the size of the place it’s perfect. Had a stunning blue...More

It was fascinating to see this castle and to learn its history. We were too early for the castle to be open but walked all round and took several photos.

After a lovely meal in the Castle Hotel we walked around Kirby Muxloe Castle which is a ruined fortified Manor House, apparently the build started in the 1400s but was never completed. A little gem of a find.

I’d been for a meal in the pub near to it, on a Friday about 13:30, and then walked round the castle and grounds
