Amazing
Jun 2021
Simply amazing and beautiful! The ruins are around the corner from where you park so not a lot of walking to get there. Wear a hat, sunblock, and repellent. Take lots of pictures!

Go to the jungle with Fidel Cruz, a unique experience
Jul 2021 • Solo
After seeing the ruins I booked a tour of the jungle with a local guide, Fidel Cruz o Fidel Tours It was fantastic since he took me to see two temples hidden in the jungle, additionally we went to an ancient mayan pool - very well maintained - where I could wet and refresh myself. He made me taste old medicines made by nature, like a liana that has the same effect as dentist anaesthetic, we saw monkeys and other wild animals. Three hours of explanations amd enrichment and on top of it he told many stories about Maya, the jungle amd Chiapas. Very recommended

One of Mexicos Treasures
Feb 2020
Hidden deep in the tropical rain forests of Chiapas, this is one of Mexicos most beautiful cultural sites. Please be advised that Mexican Immigration officials at Benito Juarez International Airport may detain passengers with no cause or written explanation. If detained crowded jail cells with dozens of passengers are held in squalor with no shower, 1 toilet per 100 passengers and no access to communication as phones and other property are confiscated.

Great Mayan Ruins visits in a Jungle Setting
Oct 2020
Due to pandemic, the ruins were recently opened to the public. I was lucky to visit them in October. These ruins form an interesting triangle of visits if you include Copal Ruinas in Honduras and Tikal in Guatemala The buildings are in great shape and the Mayans had a way of building that last ages. The area of the Mayan buildings are located in a Jungle some 12 KM from the city of Palenque. International visitors have to purchase an entrance ticket and can hire a private guide for a price. Guides are available to hire close to the entrance. The Mayans built some impressive Pyramids and palaces. Much has to be still learnt about the Mayan building. The area is well laid out with plenty of vegetation. I was impressed by the Royal palace and the ball court. The guide explained that plenty of buildings were left to be excavated as they were covered by the heavy Jungle. I am sure future generations will get to see more about the Mayan civilization. Area is pretty safe as there is plenty of security around.

Fabulous
Nov 2019
Fabulous.

This site is quite extensive and diverse. Do look for the Tower Palace (which seems quite unusual). Go inside and explore some of the tunnels. (There are bats, if you want to look for them.) There is a very interesting quadrangle with the Temples of the Sun and Cross. Dramatic. There is also a ball court although that takes a bit of imagination.

This site is a major attraction - so get there early

Atmospheric when you get away from the crowds and the hawkers
Mar 2020
This is well worth the trip down here. Its different to most of the other ruins we saw. Not just because of its jungle setting, but the architectural style too. I found the hawkers having their wares all laid out by the main buildings a bit frustrating and these ruins are also quite popular and crowded, so get here early. Also, once you walk away from the main complex you can get away from the crowds and it becomes more atmospheric if a little less spectacular. Definitely do the walk down by the cascades if you're fit enough (we're both in our sixties and my other half is due a hip replacement and we were ok). There are some more ruins in among the trees there and you may be lucky enough to spot the odd spider monkey and toucan as well.

Must do!
Jul 2019 • Friends
If you’re into the jungle, definitely go here. My favorite part was learning about the Mayan history. Additionally, this is much better when you take the tour as the guides as so knowledgeable about the area.

Trek through the jungle
Feb 2020
Did an hour and a half trek through the jungle in the national Park to see unrestored Mayan ruins with their tunnels before we visited the official restored site. Well worth doing to see the different types of trees ( balsa, rubber, etc ) Also saw howler monkeys . Lovely hike.
