Even out of season and during the current drought one is never disappointed when visiting Rietvlei, as there are always many birds to view.
Currently due to the drought the bird hide, as you walk up to the right (closest to Otto Du Plessis drive) offer the best birding opportunities.

It’s disappointing to find that the toilet facilities are not kept neat and tide during the off peak seasons! One would expect that it would be cleaned before a weekend, at least? We visited Rietvlei on a Sunday and there were spider-webs everywhere, it was clear that no cleaning or sweeping took place during the last week or two!
At least the two bird-hides were reasonably clean but in need of some small maintenance work.
It’s great to see that water is pump to the upper sections that’s suffering due to the drought, but why would unused pipes be left to perish in the sun? It’s also very unsightly and does not give a good impression.

Come on City of Cape Town you could do better than this!

A very convenient location to see many of the waders commonly present in Cape Town- ideal for birders staying in the area.

This reserve is very wild. The way it should be. You can walk on some trails. There are flamingos and pelicans galore in the reserve.

This little gem situated in Table View is a true break away from city life without having to travel to far. A man made lake, and shallow wetlands allow for a variety of bird species. Flocks of Pelicans fly around over your head, and other water birds force your eyes to the water. I photographed 28 bird species in 1 day

Boating and other water sports are allowed on the lake, as well as fishing for Carp.

Around the lake is fynbos patches which holds its' own little treasures.

A gate entrance fee is payable which goes to the upkeep of the area.
