A highly recommended visit to this observatory which is quite a bit off the beaten track! Literally, as it takes a good 144km on a decent dirt road to get to Sutherland! A short video that brings to realization how big our universe really is, precedes our short tour through the very informative and interactive exhibition. Thereafter the guide takes... More

Wonderful experience! The staff were friendly, happy to answer all questions and very professional. The tour takes you right into the inner workings of the telescope which was an amazing surprise.

SALT is based close to the town of Sutherland. Remarkable as SALT is and the technology that is used and its capabilities. We were disappointed at the visitors center bland by the least, for the amount of money spent on SALT they need to revamp it in order to meet the increasing tourists as well as local visitors. The store... More

Went to an open night they were holding at the observatory. Had a nice little lecture and then had the chance to look through some of their telescopes. It was okay but I some how expected more. I would recommend that you check it out, but go with an open mind and don't expect too much.

Go a little bit earlier since there is a interactive area with a photobooth, activities and fossils to investigate and enjoy. The tour was very informative.

We visited SALT, just the right thing to do when you visit Sutherland. You pay a minimal fee of R40pp then you can visit the exhibition and visit with a guide the South African Astronomical Observatory (SALT). Magnificent thing to see. You cannot believe it cost $32 million to build years ago. They have other country’s telescopes on site e.g.... More

While visiting Sutherland we decided to visit SALT. Being from Gauteng we are not used to this extreme cold, but what an experience. We arrived outside the official tour times but were allowed to do the tour on our own which we really enjoyed. To experience such clean crisp air was fantastic. As we were walking up to where the...
