The island itself is very small but nice. A lot of people everywhere both on the island and in the water.
The water was not really clear, the coral not in good shape but in 3 hours we saw four turtles (one quite big) and...More
All visitors to Pigeon Island go there to admire the sealife on the coral reef. Although we went there during the low season, the place was very crowded; no coffeeshop or bar on the island - bring your own snacks and drinks.
I agree with both the good and bad comments on here:
it is crowded, but if you're an ok swimmer you can swim beyond the hordes and there's a wide range of fish, some of the coral retains its colour and it's really lovely snorkelling,...More
If you have tried snorkling already, then nothing will impress you here. The reef is practically dead and the visibility is far from perfect. Maybe you'll see a shark or a turtle, but nothing more than that.
Place is definitely overcrowded, which kills the pleasure...More

Visited the island on 01/08 with my family.

A 15 minute boat ride from Nilaveli beach brings you to Pigeon Island. We arrived around 8.45 on a Saturday morning. My family went off with their snorkels round an area cordoned off with ropes and bouys (a protected area) there were only a few...More
Overcrowded with people, you can’t even swim without bumping into another snorkeler.
The 90% of the corals are dead, you won’t see much more than their stoned carcasses, except for a few of them that still have a touch of color. Even though the few...More
It's absolutely a nice spot, but not as good as many places in south-east Asia. It will definetely impress someone who has snorkelled only a coulple of times in their life, but if you plan your every holidays focusing on some fantastic places to see...More
