    Beautiful views
We visited Goodrich many many years ago when our children were young, & as we were passing & are members of English Heritage thought we would do a return. We were quite surprised at the change, there was a lovely cafe restaurant & shop. There is a pleasant walk of a couple of hundred yards to the castle itself, you can have a free audio guide but there are also boards explaining all about the castle as you walk round Well worth a re-visit

    Hidden gem
We were very pleased to have found this hidden treasure, tucked away in the Herefordshire countryside. On the day of our visit we were lucky enough to have left the drizzle of London behind and found blue sky and sunshine. It's an English Heritage site and the booking was easy to manage through their website. ALL the staff we met were very friendly, helpful and professional. I just cannot tell you the difference it makes to see a friendly face when you arrive at a site such as this. The castle ruins are interesting but make sure you have sensible footwear on as there are lots of uneven surfaces and a few very steep stairways to climb. We had sandwiches/vegan pasty & ginger beer in the cafe, which was very nice. Definitely service with a smile. Hugely well done to the staff at Goodrich Castle and it's somewhere we would definitely recommend a visit to if you're staying in the area.

    A proper medieval castle
It’s a proper castle! Beautiful setting and great views. I went as a child and am now coming back as an adult. The re are free audio tours and each part of the castle has a sign explaining what you are looking at.

    Great piece of history
Great castle to visit! Especially if you are an English Heritage member. Interesting information boards. Free audio guide. Dog friendly. Nice views of the surrounding area. We spent over 1h but you could easily spend longer. Clean toilets nearby. Nice looking cafe but we haven't tried it.

    Grand day out
Good day out for a family or just a couple like us with a dog. My wife is partially sighted so was happy to sit in the shade with our pug while I climbed the stairs to the tower and ramparts. The spiral staircase was very dark and had very narrow treads so beware and take it carefully. Had a lovely cup of tea at the cafe afterwards and bought some cherry curd and chocolate.

    Great & Interesting
English Heritage. Had the electronic reader going round and this was brilliant and made the visit excellent. Why is this not done at every place. Had reconstruction pictures at each base also, so you could see an artist impression of what it may have looked like and that made it very easy to visualise. So with the information at your ear and the pictures it just brought the whole castle to life

    Wonderful castle
One of the least ruined castles under EH and very well supported with information boards, albeit we should have gone for the audio guide which we had at another of the monuments - they are excellent and very easy to use - but we were on a tight time scale! Great views to be had from the top of the keep, but the spiral stairs are very tight and the steps are quite small, so care is required. Add in a very good cafe and the result is a nice way to spend a couple of hours.

    Goodrich Revisted
My wife and I first visited the castle in 1996 when we stayed in the village. At that time there was very little infrastructure, a ticket kiosk and a small tea shack (which sold the tastiest Carrot Cake we have ever eaten!). Fast forward to 2023, car park, cafe and a shop! We are not English Heritage members, but the entry charge and car park charge were reasonable. All staff were polite, friendly and helpful. There is an audio commentary included, although you may wish to supply your own headphones as otherwise you will be holding it to your ear the whole time. The cafe supplies good food including ‘light lunches’, but sadly no Carrot Cake this time. There are some steep steps, but nothing too horrendous. All in all, an easy 5 out of 5 - well done English Heritage.

    Superb English Heritage castle.....
My wife and I spend a very pleasant afternoon exploring this castle, which has been fairly well preserved. Free car parking is available on site for English Heritage members or £3.00 for non-members. Excellent, easy to use, handheld audio step by step commentary guide included with your visit. This is a must, as it gives a complete history of the castle and its features. This castle itself is set in beautiful countryside and we were fortune enough to have a lovely sunny day. The cafe, on site at the reception area, is quite handy too for a refreshment. We would definitely recommend a visit.

    Full of History
The cost is about right for a heritage site. If you’re not a member pay online first to make it slightly cheaper. Take some old fashioned plug in headphones if you use the audio commentary which is free. Not Iphone ones ! If you get a chance read up on the history of the castle beforehand as it makes you more aware looking around what went on over 600/700 years ago. It is a fairly complete ruin. Worth a visit once. Toilets and cafe at the entrance so when you walk up to the castle you will need to go back to the main entrance if you need these facilities. Car parks £3 either card or cash if you’re not an English Heritage member.

Goodrich Castle
6th May

My Partner and I visited a number of castles on 6th May including Goodrich. All the staff were friendly and helpful, but in particular we want to shout out to Ingo who greeted us at the draw-bridge. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable and informative, but he was also a barrel of laughs and incredibly friendly. We had very lengthy discussions and ingo was by far the most helpful and friendly gentleman we met that day. It made our day and the entire rest of our visit blissful.

Great views interesting history , slightly long winded audio guide.
If you can manage it its worth climbing the steps in the turret as the view at the top of the tower is fabulous. The steps are steep and narrow and are circular there is a rope to help you navigate up and down , children will need supervision.
It is a ruin so care is needed as the ceilings can be low, the floors uneven and the spaces dark.

The castle is fairly large. It is a short walk from the reception, cafe and gift shop to the castle itself. This was one of the first English Heritage castles I have ever been to and we enjoyed it so much we bought a year's membership afterwards. Certainly worth incorporating in with a trip to the area. E.g. staying in Symonds Yat.

We visited during the Easter weekend, and took part in the activities. The trail was well organised and good value for money.
The castle was busy which I think added to the experience to see it bustling as it would’ve been in its heyday.

My 3yr old enjoyed exploring the castle and hearing about the knights and ladies who lived there.

Lovely visit to Goodrich Castle today. Fabulous views from the various towers. Nice and dog friendly throughout. Volunteers very helpful and informative. Bit uneven surface in the castle so advise wear suitable footwear, also muddy in the bottom of some of the towers. So much history to absorb, with lovely stained glass windows in the Chapel. Good sized car park and nice cafeteria attached to the shop.

Located near the border with Wales, this castle was home to various royal families and personalities, the most notorious ones being William Marshal, Countess Joan de Valence and the Talbots.
It is a beautiful castle which held many people and despite being a defensive stronghold, it was (and had to be) a very comfortable home, having everything a house needs, from forniture to art. The nobility obviously held art wherever they were going and during the time period in which the castle was built (11th-13th century), the art was somewhat between Romanesque and Gothic. I really recommend to visit this arquitectural masterpiece and to take many photos.
