Nice But Neglected
Sep 2019
Not sure what to make of this site. The royal residence building is rundown with the lower part below the main stairs suffering from broken windows, lots of trash, and spray painting. To us, this grand building looked closed to the public. Nearby are a series of other buildings one of which contains a silk museum. We didn’t go inside. The best part of our visit here were the numerous photo opportunities. We enjoyed this very much. But we can’t understand how a UNESCO site is allowed to deteriorate like the main building here. Very puzzling.

A Beautiful View!
Apr 2019 • Couples
Worth a drive-by and quick stop to take in the beautiful view from across the road. We were fortunate to have a cousin who was raised in Caserta to show us around and the history of this place is as interesting as the palace itself.

Royal residence close to the the main one in Caserta
Feb 2018 • Solo
Another royal residence is located, also part of the Caserta one. This one was used as a hunting grounds, and then later transformed into a silk factory, thus a village was created around it to bring in workers from the nearby towns. Still today many silks are ordered by Buckingham Palace, the White House, Quirinale and Chigi palaces.

Nice Silk factory museum
May 2018 • Couples
A short distance from the royal palace of Caserta, situated in a lovely place with a beautiful view (chosen of course by the Bourbon kings...) the factory museum is an interesting place to visit. We arrived in early afternoon, so a tour in English was not available so we joined a group in Italian. The restored factory is really impressive and we could enjoy it more if there were some English written explanation (there are some on the first floor). The rooms are evidence of a faded glory and my impression is that the rest of the mansion is somewhat shabby and not well restored. The perimeter of the mansion is clean and nice, but the surroundings, like the stairs ascending to the place were full of garbage. It wasn't easy to find since there are too few signs to direct you to the place.

Good view, but very disappointed about silk factory
Nov 2017 • Couples
After a complicated drive to find the Belvedere, we wanted to also visit the silk factory. Very disappointed that entry not possible without a guide. So I would not recommend going there for only the view. Waste of time and effort.

Interesting Tour, Once We Got In
Aug 2017 • Couples
San Leucio is off the beaten track and can be a little difficult to get to without a car. You also shouldn't expect any of the staff to speak any English. That said, after a cab ride and quite a lot of pointing, we managed to get on an Italian tour, which showed us the silk-making machines and the Queen's bathtub. The signage within the museum itself included some English and there were great views from the top. Like many of the attractions in this part of Italy, the Belvedere has obviously seen better days, but it was worth spending an hour on a trip from Caserta.

Crafts industry outshines palace
Jul 2017
The hunting lodge at San Leucio is a stone's throw away from the main palace at Caserta and easily combined for a visit.
San Leucio includes the silk manufacturing facility installed by the Bourbon kings. The machines, mainly in wood, are intricate and amazing. The guide was wonderful. After learning about the silk making process and the highly advanced work benefits the royal company provided, the palace itself was less impressive. But it had done quirky details: a wooden understructure, a huge bath tub for the queen and an errant cat that obviously knew how to get in.

Not only beauty

It is unbelievable to think that not only some of the best fabrics in the world were born here but even the history of your pc started in this experimental avant-garde factory. Don't you believe me? Go and see!

Worth the effort
May 2014 • Couples
We had a recommendation to visit the Royal Silk Factory when an Italian friend heard that we would be visiting Castera and I'm glad that they did. Also known as "Real Belvedere Di San Leucio" (on the museum receipt) it is situated on the outskirts of Caserta with a magnificant view of Caserta & the Royal Palace.

I won't go into the history, you can find that in Wikipedia, we visited on a week day in spring and other than a school group, we were about the only visitors. It was even slightly difficult to even find the bus that went there (in front of the Caserta train station, €1) which is quite amazing for a site on the UNESCO World Heritage register. We did a tour without a guide as there wasn't an english speaking guide available, but we had to be accompanied, so a delightful gentleman took us around, inside and out, for an hour, and it cost two of us €6! If there was a guide available that would have been an additional €15, but we got by.

An amazing place for so many reasons. If you are in the area, just do it!
