This complex has been around for many years. It became famous for its manufactured leather goods and garments. It has offerededucation and employment to many disadvantaged people through its church activities and programmes.

The Mariannhill Monastery was established in 1885 by the Trappist order of monks. It is well worth a visit in order to get a taste of Austrian and German religious architecture and church interior. It is kept in pristine condition, has a small museum, a sophisticated colour printing works and a textile garment making outfit which supplies most of South Africa’s clergy.
