Great beach to hang out. There is a tidal pool. Toilets are close by and very clean. Lots of new art work on the walls reflecting the ocean and it’s inhabitants. Worth a visit

Beautiful tidal pool and lovely sandy beach. Life guard on duty. Colorfully painted change rooms that do need a face-lift especially after some were damaged badly by fire started by vagrants.

We almost crossed this beach off of our list. After we had stopped in Muizenberg Beach we figured that our time was better spent checking out other spots near Cape Town.

So glad we made the time for St. James! For one, there are far more of the colorful beach huts at St. James than Muizenberg Beach. Muizenberg only had about 5, whereas St. James had double or triple that. If you're looking for the iconic beach hut photo, definitely recommend St. James over Muizenberg.

Another highlight was the tide pool. We didn't have our swimming gear, so we opted to wade in as well as walk around on the barrier wall (we came at low tide). The most biodiversity I've ever seen in a tide pool! Sea urchins, sea stars, schools of minnows, tons of underwater plants, we could have stayed all day.

Was also child/family friendly. We saw many families bring their children to wade in the water and check out the tide pools.

Check on wind before visit. Take picnic basket. Take umbrella for morning visit. We traveled by car, but train would also be convenient. Not sure if the Red Bus does this route.

St James Beach offers one a delightful place to sit and enjoy a seaside swim in a safe environment. The water is not as bone numbingly chilly as the Atlantic Seaboard side and there’s always a great mix of old and young enjoying the tranquil beauty that the sea provides.

Stroll down from the St James station and under the railway line. Plenty of parking a a great place to enjoy with friends and to make new ones 💙

As we drove around the coast, St James Beach was a fun little stop along the way. The beach huts are very colourful and Instagram worthy (although I was pleasantly surprised to see there weren’t any people taking selfies!).
The water is a lot warmer here than the other beaches we visited, which is why so many people were swimming in it.
Little tidal and rock pools which is great for small children.
Lots of seaweed and broken shells - so not as undisturbed as other beaches we visited.

We absolutely love stopping at St James Beach whenever we're cruising along the False Bay coast. After walking through the tunnel under the St James railway line, we're always amazed by the beauty and colour that greets us, and we always leave there with a beautiful and colourful gallary at the end of the day. We travel all over the Cape and live for those photo opportunities, and at St James they are all over. The atmosphere is always vibey with many families around and our kids love the rock and tidal pools. It's safe and I especially appreciate the presence of lifeguards.

I would recommend visiting on a beautiful sunny day at low tide, in the late afternoon when the sun further illuminates the colourful and historical bathing huts, and other beachgoers are starting to make their way home. St. James gets pretty busy during the Summer days.

Tip: Take a stroll further on to Kalk Bay and take time to explore numerous boutiques, markets, galleries and shops along the way.

Have fun on the coast,

We were looking for a beach without all the wind and and flying in our eyes (which we got at the beach in Hout Bay almost every day, unfortunately) and without the big waves. We found this little sequestered tidal pool by St. James on False Bay. The beach was small, and there was a small area for swimming with no waves, which was nice for my kids. Not sure if we were just lucky or if it was the big mountain behind the town, but there was almost no wind the day we visited. As a bonus, there were the picturesque multicolored cabins behind the beach, and a tidal area next to the beach where you could climb over the rocks and see some small marine life in the tidal crags.
