To truly appreciate this place I'd recommend doing a little research. The Great War is in progress. Soldiers from accross the country and indeed the commonwealth, are being brought over to the south of England. This will be the last stop before embarking on ships...More

Go its fab - I was rather overwhelmed to see that the YMCA have dropped in and added their support to this amazing and touching collective memory of the fabulous people who sacrificed themselves for king and country.

These wonderful regimental badges were carved into the chalk downs above the village of Fovant by the soldiers of those regiments. Some were done when they were training during WW1 others are more recent. There are laybys on both sides of the road (A30 Shaftesbury...More

You can see the chalk military badges from a layby. We planned to see them. There's a description board to view with nice details. Worth a look if you're interested in this type of thing.

The Fovant badges lay up in the hills, just off the A30 - between Salisbury and Shaftesbury. Amazing historic tribute to the past, kept very well by the local residents. Excellent place, the parking spot on the A30 allows for a great picture opportunity.

Impressive display cut into the chalk hillside. Probably because an observer is looking at them from the north, they are not very clear; a summer visit might mean that the sun is both higher and more northerly and would illuminate the badges better. one tip:...More

World War regimental badges including Australian and other Empire troops lived here and made chalk badges in the hillside. Some lost badges include British Red Cross. A moving and emotional site
