Beautiful guided tour, and near a panoramic short walk
Jul 2020 • Friends
A nice cave, visited in a small group with a helpful guide, describing the cave and its story, starting with its discovery. You walk down about 60 meters, along a safe path, and then back up after a suggestive lights and sound show in the deeper chamber, evocating the moment of the cave discovery. Particularly impressive the formations in huge "sails" shape, and the huge columns.
Outside, a nice view point is worth a stop, and from the parking, a panel indicates a short didactic walk up to another nice viewpoint.

Did not visit the grotto, but went for the view
May 2019 • Couples
We did not have time to visit the grottos, but upon advice from the locals, we stopped by for the view you have on site. It is certainly worth the stop.

well worth the visit to these caves

Saw an advert for the cves in the hotel we stayed at. As it was on the way thought we would take a look. Well it was well worth the look and the flyer from the hotel gave us 10% discount. They were very helpful and we were able to leave our motorcycle gear behind the counter. We had to wait for 25 mins for the official guide you cannot go on by yourself. The one down side was the the party was to large for my liking. Cannot win on everything and the views were fantastic. Long time since I have been in a cave and better than I remember. Very informative guide and free handsets to use, each part numbered so you just hit the number to hear the discription.

Beautiful Caves
Jun 2018 • Couples
Loved these caves very much as they were very natural compared to a lot of grottes. There are a lot of wet steep stairs up and down, that could be a big challenge to the infirm. We are in our mid sixties and we were fine

Hidden Gem!
Jun 2017 • Couples
This cave unlike a lot of others doesn't seem as well advertised or quite as commercialised as some, but oh boy! What a hidden gem. The Grotte itself is so pretty, and not as tall as some so you could get good views of all the rock formations. It is quite narrow in places, and their are loads of steps. Some of the stair cases are very narrow with steps that weren't very deep......and all those steps had to be climbed to get back out, though we weren't hurried by the Guide. Whilst I don't want to put anyone off, it is something to bear in mind if you have health issues or dodgy knees!! Probably not suited to very young children though.
We had the Audio guide which was great.
There is plenty of parking.

Before you access the cave there is a garden area with stunning views over the Ardeche and across the gorge.....and it is so peaceful.
There is a small gift shop and cafe, they have hot and cold drinks, snacks and a tasty panini! Not a huge selection, but ok.
Well worth a visit.

Thank you so much for your comment! Our cave is definitely a gem of Ardeche region. It has got so many different concretions and the variety of colours. We accept the fact that we have got 250 stairs. Whenever we see the people that might have troubles to go up and down, we warn them about the difficulty they might have. Regarding small children, either they are helped by their parents or carried in the arms if necessary. As you could experienced, we propose the audio guides for free to all our foreign visitors. And as you mentioned, the view from our garden area is one of the most beautiful in this part of Ardeche. We hope you liked your stay and see you soon again.

A wonderful experience!

This cave was fascinating! Go--no matter what your nationality because they have the tour in your language on a handheld audio tour. Very simple to navigate--the guide lectures in French, I had an English device. When the guide stops there is a sign telling you what number to press. It is a challenge to climb up from the bottom especially with bad knees. I would recommend a walking stick. To give you an reference--I am due to have knee surgery in a few weeks to repair a frayed meniscus and I was able to take on the challenge.

One of the best

It is really a wonderful and mesmarising place to visit. It is the only "grotte" where you are very close the rocks and you feel like an explorer yourself. Like all these places, you should not be afraid of heights!!! It's a breathtaking place... if you only one "grotte" in the area, La Madeleine has to be the one!

Stunning Cavern, A Bit Overrun
Sep 2016 • Couples
Despite being a touristy destination, it's still very much worth it to visit this cavern. They've gone to great lengths to make this accessible but be prepared for many stairs and much walking. The formations and lighting make this worth the effort to visit. Cheers!

Fascinating to find out what's under your feet

As if the landscape above ground it the Ardeche isn't spectacular enough, a visit to the Madeleine Caves shows you it's pretty spectacular beneath ground too. We visited on an incredibly hot day and it was rather nice to go somewhere a bit cooler.

You are shown around the cave by a guide. English visitors get an audio guide but I kept one ear on the French and found that the English guide sells you short. If you have a good understanding of French, you'll get a lot more out of listening to the real life guide. I found myself translating for my partner so he didn't miss out. My command of French geological terms has improved massively since visiting the Ardeche. ;-)

The descent is very deep and you find yourself in caverns full of stalactites and stalactites and other geological features. The story of how the cave was wonderfully illustrated at one point in a son et lumiere display, all done to the tune of O Fortuna from Carmina Burana (or the Old Spice advert). All slightly camp and over-dramatic but fun.

Coming back it's all up hill and I noticed that some people really struggled. It's also a bit slippery in parts so you need to be careful.

The Madeleine Cave is definitely worth a visit. It makes you look differently at the world above once you've seen what's below. We also visited the recreation of the Pont D'Arc Cave and I think our experience was far better for having already recently seen the Madeleine Cave.

It's worth also checking out the little exhibition before or after your visit as it gives you a really good explanation of how the Val Pont D'Arc was formed. There's also some useful info on the flora and fauna of the area.
