Oh no don’t go, please! This “museum” is a sham of peers - nothing but ugly commercialization and essential insult to the Netherlands vesting heritage. I’d be better walk around and see the fortified town without entering the so-called museum … just not worth it.

The indoor museum is not really exciting, though the history is well shown. The most interesting is outdoor museum. A large area with all the cannons and the demonstration of the cannon. It's a nice place to visit with your kids.

Very interesting, you can learn lots about the history of Naarden and also the waterline of The Netherlands. The views are also stunning. The only downside is that all the information is in Dutch, so is worth it visit it knowing the language or with someone who does.

I was aware from reviews that this museum offered little concession to those of us who do not read Dutch! There was a lot of information and NONE OF IT translated, not even in summary. So I am none the wiser as to the history or importance of this impressive fort. On a sweltering day it was a pleasure to wander down the cool tunnels and there are some tableaux of soldiers / weapons. Bizarrely a herd of goats resides on the site. An important historic site that deserves better really. It was not cheap to go into either. Naarden is a pleasant if rather quiet old town (impressive church) worth the visit but not easy to get to - the frequent buses by-pass the old centre. Bus 110 from Weesp to Bussum wil get you there but check the times and the alternatives as swervices are not that regular or predictable.

What an amazing experience to learn about the history of this oddly shaped fort. It's also the least visited museum which makes it more enjoyable to learn about the history and enjoy the walks around the museum. Very interesting history! Worth the visit.

The museum tells the history of Naarden and also tells a lot about fortress buildings. See how the soldiers lived, worked and slept under the fortification walls of the city.
And there's a lot more....

From here you can make a boat trip around the Fortress town of Naarden... Really a great way to view the fortress town.

And what kids love most (also some "big" kids) is Garrison Day - first and third Sunday of the month when the historical cannons are fired!

It was very quite when we visited in May. Well worth a visit to learn more about the history and specially the plans that were made to protect themselves. Very good engineering !

Nice to be back.
They moved the entrance !
Especially liked the 2 movies playing in the ammo room; very nice to learn about the Dutch water defenses throughout the centuries.

Good for 1~2 hours.

If you're in Naarden, this will introduce you to the history of the design of the area. We enjoyed the informative tour of the sights which we were able to do at our own pace.

The museum is located in one of the walls of the vesting near the bridge next to the moat. It is relatively small but but has interesting layouts, maps and literature of the town and period. One can take a walk over the bridge to where one can see the old gun batteries and view the vesting from the outside
