Driving from.Caceres we took the back way to.the Dam and with the.high temperatures spent the day swimming & bird spotting. Absolutely idyllic apart from humanity & the litter and dog faeces deface such a beautiful place. Stork nest is still on the old Red Cross...More

We were here in February 2006 and it was cold in Mérida. Proserpina lake had no bathers, either acuatic or solar. The dam is only impressive if you remember that it was built by the Romans. Water from here was transported by canal and then...More

Very pretty dammed lake that provided water to Mérida through the aqueducts. Outside of the city. Beautiful, quiet place.

During the summer, the Roman dam at Proserpina can be reached via bus (Line 13) from near the Alcazaba. There's a bus stop right at one end of the dam, and walking the length of it is pretty easy. There's plenty of signs in English...More

We went at 9:30 pm on a Saturday with 4 kids (ages 4,5,7,8) for a short walk and then had dinner. It's a good spot for lake swimming during the afternoon and they also rent little boats (6 E an hour I think). We reserved...More

The existing dam today is obviously new. But in this same place the Romans had built a smaller dam from which they transported the water through the aqueduct to Merida

A real interesting Roman dam and reservoir, information signs also in English . A good walk with plenty of nesting and flying Storks and beautifully situated restaurants to watch birds and eat good food!

The dam is around 5 km outside of Merida so we called in here on our way home. It was a beautiful day and you can walk around the dam and view the old Roman dam wall. There are three bars/restaurants which have views over...More

A facinating construct of roman ingenuity, this lake is artificial but then again it was 2000 years ago. A lovely area for a stroll.

This is an amazing piece of Roman engineering. The lake is very pretty and it is interesting to see the way it was construction. There is not much parking and the signage is not the best but it is worth a visit.
