A great place to spook your friends. In the summer it is often very dry and quite pleasant but in the winter the council will often close the tunnel because the water falling from the air shaft freezes and forms a large ice circle in...More

It’s a bit of a hidden gem really. Unless you’ve been on the Brampton Valley Way not many people have actually seen the tunnels. It’s really an impressive sight! Cold, dark and dank but pretty remarkable! An iconic part of British history. It’s not the...More

Walked the Brampton Valley Way from Market Harborough to Northampton. The route includes 2 tunnels, the first is at Great Oxenden, the second and shorter is at Kelmarsh. The tunnels give added interest and are atmospheric especially if unaccompanied. A good torch is needed. Would...More

This is the second time we have visited, we bought some other family members with us including a 5 and 9 year old. They brought their torches and loved walking in the dark tunnel, imagining what it would have been like on the steam train....More

We stayed at a campsite nearby to meet family, we all live miles apart & this is central for most! We have children ranging from 5 to 14 so wanted something different to keep everyone entertained. We parked in the free car park, I believe...More

I cycled through this tunnel the other day not realising how long it was and how dark. I stopped half way through having an anxiety attack because I don't like tunnels. It was muddy and pitch black, a normal bike lamp won't cut it. On...More

I thoroughly enjoy my disused railway line walks and finally found time to walk a large part of the Brampton Valley Way......we walked about 7 miles of it.We spoke to a few passers by who informed us that this was one of the longest disused...More

Almost definitely the best tunnel in Kelmarsh. Could be improved by being less leaky. Probably don't need a torch. But suggest bringing one anyway in case you change your mind halfway/ after five metres. One highlight is the giant air vents half way along that...More

Thought it was lovely well preserved part of history and I wonder why the second tunnel next to it hasn't also been kept open? Can you get to the shaft from the top I wonder too?

Something different. Long tunnel which is very dark and lots of holes in the ground so a twisted ankle is possible. Take a torch! Lots of people walk through it, usually dog walkers.
