Super nice hike, view and nature. Can see along the way, waterfalls, mountains, different types of tropical trees. You can hear always the birds and can see Tucans as well.

As a TripAdvisor DESTINATION EXPERT travel is my hobby & passion as I have 31 years of exploring Colombia and now living 5 years in Medellin and visiting just about every city, village and beach - it is my pleasure to provide my experiences of Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

I am in Minca right now, the lush landscape, the birds, the animals, the mist in the forest, the fresh air, the nature...............this is a place that you can not describe rather you just need to come and experience it for yourself.

Yes I have thousands of photos, hundreds of videos, I have visited here numerous times over the past years and always return to find peace and re-connect with my inner child, love it.

Simply absolutely an incredible park.

Gorgeous views, great for hiking, so many places to eat and explore inside - def recommend the coffee tour, rio Minca, rio Marinka, Pozo Azul, el Mirador (pictures below, a spot you get some of the most beautiful views to take pics).

I walked/road my cross bike/with camping gear/food from Minca to el Y in road to San Lorenzo and from S. Lorenzo to camping area at sendero to Cerro Kennedy. Enjoyed great new paved road from just below El Campano to el Y. Great tienda/restaurant in el Campano! Almost no 4WD traffic, a few motos. Cool refreshing climate as you climb higher. Road to San Lorenzo was one of worst Ive seen in the world[Ive been everywhere]. BUT it got worse above S. Lorenzo to campground area. Like a dry washed out streambed/rio! Of course I was pushing a bike w/camping gear.I watched a 4WD truck almost on its side on the sendero!
Great flowers/moss/lichen in openings in forest. Birding is HARD in this type of forest for me. Have had more luck in deserts, el campo, parks and nice hotels in tropical zones. I would not pay for birding tour unless I knew what I wanted to see!
So the little campground[$COP25mil] was 100 meters from a huge TV building/tower with a generator running 7/24 hrs. Not a very tranquil experience. Could barely hear birds... Restaurant/hostal[can't remember name. Only one there] had overpriced dinner of rice/pollo with panello drink. Its is a long hard drive up there for there supplies. So bring as much of your food as possible. I also carried my own water filter bottle. Greyll from US. I hate buying plastic water bottles. So it took me more than an hour[not 40 minutes] to walk up to below gate below military base. I am slow...Left at 4:30. Got nice red sunrise pic of moon above wax palms. But as for distant peaks there was too much haze/smoke etc. in valleys below for good pictures. Maybe a different time of year for better weather.
So this is more of a commercial base for Cell, microwave and TV towers than a tranquil natural park experience. Purace N.Park above cococnuco/Popayon much better experience! I did it on my own so not a lot of money but would not pay for tour there from Minca/Santa Marta unless weather much clearer. Hard bike ride /walk down to paved road at el Y after that serious fun on new paved road to el Campano to outside Minca. Have walked around mountains all over the world and this was average or below. But easy get away from Minca for 2 days.

Although there is nice hiking on the mountain, and beautiful views, the main attraction is likely the birding. There are many 'backpackers', likely because everything is so affordable, but the thing that makes this so unique is the bird variety and abundance. However, to really leverage this, I suggest you hire a guide because they are so helpful (and of course, bring binoculars. BTW, I do not think a scope is worth transporting since the sight-lines are short, and the birds are often on the move). One last note, the roads up above Minca are very rough and require both a 4X4 and a good healthy body as you will be bounced around (seriously).

Make sure you do the 4 day hike to the lost city! It is tough but really worth it. It’s not for the inexperienced though

There are quite number of places to explore and you can get the information in the internet or in Minca. The area is not always accessible to cars and sometime the only way to reach some places is by trekking or taking motorbykes.
One of our trips was with motorbykes to see the sunrise from Cerro Kennedy at an altitude of 2800 meters. It was a breathtaking view (a photo is attached).
You can visit La Victoria coffee factory and families who produce coffee for their living. The beautiful nature with hundreds of different birds and interesting history makes this region very attractive

The hike changes as you go! Only 2 places to stay at the top, one is very rough. Worth the adventure! We took motos up and walked down. LONG hike so you have to be up for it. There is a military base at the top, if you are nice, they may let you close to get a better view.

A lot to do: you can hike to miradors, go to see coffee plantation, or indiginous people life, many excursions to be taken around, or just relax and enjoy the view and peaceful atmosphere of this place

Kind of a hippy backpacker town. There is a coffee farm and a micro brewery outside of town. The roads are a little rough but worth the trip. Very quaint shops & restaurants in the tint town.
