MacCarthy's is a place steeped in local history. There's a lot of local history to be learned if you have the time to talk with one of the ladies behind the bar, who can tell you about Dr. Aiden MacCarthy and his heroic service as...More

I just love the hospitality of this little pub and the ladies that own it and their Pugs Rocky and Herbie!! We generally sit in the “snug”, which is a lovely little private booth. Must visit!!!

We popped down to Macarthy's to try and meet Adrienne and Nikki. Their father and my father were in a Japanese POW camp together and I'd read her father's book, A Doctor's War, and Pete McCarthy's book about him, The Doctor and the Samaurai Sword....More

Its a nice, cosy pub with a good atmosphere. The food is not that good. Manly sandwiches that are cut in vey small pieces and falls apart when you try to eat it. Nothing special. The lady behind the counter can come across as rude...More

Visited on 18th September. Lots of Irish music that was fantastic. Better still landlady Adrienne is a Watford FC supporter and Vicarage Rd sign is up in the bar. Wonderful friendly bar to visit. Best in Castletownbere. Highly recommended.

If you only step inside one pub on your visit to Castletownbere (and you do have a lot of choice) do make it this traditional Irish pub, and no trip is complete without a pint of Murphy's and a crab sandwich.

Seems to be the go to evening spot for the town. Friendly staff and locals plus those of us visiting. Good musician on Friday night, not traditional, but I suspect there are trad nights also. Good night and craic. Well worth a visit.
