This is set in a beautiful area just outside of Castletownbere. I used to come here often as a child. You could walk around the ruins of the Puxley mansion & the Dunboy Castle ruins, so much history connected with both. Then a few years...More

When we arrived in Casteltownbere, my husband parked in the first parking lot we came to. We asked a vendor nearby where the Dunboy Castle was and could we walk. He indicated that yes, it was about a 20 - 30 minute walk, so we...More

An amazing and powerful story behind this impressive historic location. Found this commemorative song, 'The Ghosts of Dunboy', on YouTube (lyrics below). The ghosts of those who died here in battle in 1602 must surely still haunt the ruins of Dunboy Castle! Donal, he was...More

The Puxley Mansion is only visible from a distance behind a fence. It's grandeur can still be appreciated but it is unfinished. There is only a gateway and part of the walls left of the Dunboy Castle. These are more appreciated if you know about...More

It is such a pity that nobody can get in to see this Castle, especially with the magnificent History behind it. It is magnificent to look across at it, except for the monstrosity behind it, what is going on with the modern building at the...More

Don't expect much. Puxley mansion is fenced off and locked up. Never opened as a hotel as intended. Nice architecture but will become a ruin without investment. Mansion is surrounded at tear by ugly concrete townhouses or apartments that are also abandoned. Dunboy castle is...More

Dunboy Castle is interesting for its history, especially if a local gives the background for the story behind the castle. Puxley Mansion is currently closed and under renovation, but with no timeline.

Well worth a walk around this area - firstly to see and learn about the history of the O'Sullivan Bere family and their defeat at the hands of the British forces. Then there is the Puxley mansion, almost converted to a luxury hotel some years...More
