There is a very moving memorial plaque just past the gate. You must read the plaque to understand the history and the drama of the castle.

Ireland is a country steeped in History. This old Castle mostly a shell is quite neat. Through the opening are the fire department and a sports field. A Grateful Remembrance stone is also located just through the opening. For the United Irishmen from 1798-1803 who...More

stumbled across the Macroom Castle as we made our way from Blarney across to Kilnarney. The castle is a nice spot to stop for a leg stretch and stroll.

lovely place, with a path near river, great view of river and animals, quiet and the place has rich history, and on top of that it was free.

Worth investigating is this castle in Macroom's town square, or what remains of it. In the square you will also find other intriguing markers, buildings, hotels and shops. We visited later as it began to get dark. A must see if you're in Macroom.

Drove they the castle archway and past the two cannons on either side. Lovely walks down by the river with plenty wildlife to see. Weather was a bit bad but didn't detract from the beauty of Macroom. Lovely town.
