- janiceamurray01Western Ireland, Ireland10 contributionsThe best museum ever on the social history of IrelandWell this was an amazing place so unexpected. I didn’t even know the place was there and when talking to one of the local ladies who had been extremely helpful to us in giving us directions, even down to escorting us to the area we wanted to go to, I asked what the interesting looking building was and she explained it was the Jackie Clarke collection. We returned next day to visit the place (as we were on a time restricted visit to Ballina) and were pleasant surprised. It has to be the best museum on social history, so many things to read and see, artefacts of many types and a wonderful short film on the history of the man. The staff in the museum were so lovely, very helpful explaining lots about how the museum began, they were very knowledgeable. For anyone interested in the social history of Ireland, 1916 and the civil war, I would urge a visit, Ballina is very lucky to have been able to keep this is the town where it all began. So many things go up to Dublin! So all in all we met some fantastic, really helpful, friendly and knowledgable people and worth a revisit in the future. Goodness me, what a joy that was!
The scale and variety of what Jackie Clarke collected over the years has been professionally and carefully curated in what is a veritable Aladdin's Cave in the heart of Ballina.
There was enough to keep anyone interested for days if one had the time. Maps, leaflets, posters and not one, but two 1916 original Easter Rising declarations are all highlights. However, for me personally, the highlight was seeing the name of an Uncle, who was included among a list of Ballina men who died in pursuit of an independent Ireland.
This is a wonderful treasure trove of a museum that should be the highlight of any visit to Ballina.

I had my arm twisted to visit the Jack Clarke collection exhibit in the center of ballina as I hadn't heard about it previously. It was free entry with a quick walk around the walled garden before entering the building. It was very interesting with lots of exhibits from the formation of the Irish state with hand written letters from the likes on Michael Collins and an original of the Irish proclamation. There was also a very interesting map room as well as posters and newspapers from times gone by. It was a rare nugget to find for anybody with evening a passing interest in Irish history. Definitely worth visiting and could be promoted better by tourist board.

Great museum/tour didn’t expect the scale of the exhibit.
Went for an evening, could spend a week going through every detail.
5/5 Would very highly recommend visiting if interest in history/Irish history.
1916 Proclamation a real draw to the experience.

This (Sicilian American) New Yorker just returned a few months ago from my fourth time in Ballina area. It's a wonderful area as is JC Museum loaded with great history.
We spent unhurried hours examining so much. The ladies who work there are amazingly kind and helpful as well. You'll get much great history and keen insights from a warm staff as well.
