About The Menjangan Activities
Experience the beauty of the park on horseback. Our stable of faithful Australian horses know these woods probably better than we do! Take in the views of the forest and beach, guided by our trained staff who tailor each trek to suit your riding ability. Early morning or late afternoon are best, so both you and the horses avoid the heat of the sun

The Menjangan is a pretty nature reserve located on the north-west coast of Bali. There is plenty of deer, kingfishers and squirls to spot in the wild. The horses: I have spotted 2 of the horses with "pink eye desease"; this is a serious and very contagious eye infection that doesn't heal by itself. When I asked about it the guide said the horse had it already when it arrived to the stables years ago (riiiiight.. it could barely open its eyes due to the soreness) and he also told me that it got it due to rolling in the sand (sure. I have seen thousands of horses in my life, and never ever heared a story or seen an example like this). Honestly I really hope from the bottom of my heart that the management of the The Menjangan resort will get a good vet over to fix this condition. The saddle and tack seemed to fit the horse well. Also they provide riding boots/helmet in many sizes if desired. After take off we walked down a rough gravel stone road, to take a small sideway bush path after where we started trotting and cantering (+- 80cm wide) . Small, big and medium trees on the left and right side, dangerously close to ones legs whilst riding (defo not a good idea for beginners). There are tree roots sticking out everywhere, that make the horses trip over 'em, so watch your path. We took a very rough stoney rocky path down to the ocean where we took some pics. The horses ate some seaweed? Haha never seen that before! The guide was very friendly and we did talk a lot. He sure knows a lot about the environment. Eventually as an adult experienced rider I would not recommend this trip. Compare to my horse riding experience of last year May in Ubud the terrain in The Menjangan felt a bit unsafe to me. In my opinion the paths are not suitable for galloping at all due to big rocks/holes in the road /trees everywhere. My horse for the day was not responsive to the bit brake-wise, it made me struggle with it, which was a pity because it made me enjoy the ride less. Next to that I don't feel good at all about the contagious pink eye disease situation at the stables.

Dear tropicalann, thanks a lot for your concerns. I can assure you that our horses are well treated by a Veterinary regularly, to be honest we have him visiting every 3 months to ensure the well being of all horses. It is our main focus and concern to ensure their health on site. Furthermore do we have an external consultant checking every 2 months on the condition of the horses as well. We would be very happy to introduce you to them on your next visit to see what are our measures to take care of our horses. The grounds inside the National Park through the forest are certainly not suitable for gallop and we do not allow any such activity here. It is obviously our duty to ensure the safety of the riders as well as the horses too. However I can assure you that all horses are well trained in this terrain and have no challenges trotting through the paths in the forest. Personally I had my first horse ride here on site and for a beginner it was very suitable from my point of view. The horse never put me at risk or made me feel uncomfortable; also the guide was very helpful to show me on how to handle the horse as well. At the same time we appreciate your positive feedback on our guide and happily shared it with him. And as you saw are our horses very keen on snacking along the way and even appreciate some tasty seaweed as a bite, certainly unique to watch. Ingo & The Menjangan Family Operations Manager

I'm always rather wary of riding at stables abroad as you never know what you will get but I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the stable yard. The horses all looked well fed, had decently maintained feet and their tack seemed to fit well. They seemed genuinely happy and the stables were shady and spacious with a sand school that they also use for turn out. They told me that the horses get taken away to a field for a holiday after the tourist season ends. Our guide was helpful and pointed out various birds to us along the way. He also hopped off to get some lovely close up photos of us when we reached the beach. My beginner partner enjoyed it all and Biwan my horse was a steady but responsive ride as a more experienced rider. They had a good range of hats, gloves and boots available to borrow if you needed it. Would recommend; go early or late as it was very warm.
