"Do you want to escape mass-tourism of Lisbon? You love nature, and have at least a day to spend in it? Serra de Montejunto is a place for you. Locals are calling it simply The Mountain as it defined regions history. Its a house of unique fauna and flora, and Portuguese history built in stone walls of the only ice factory in the country and arms of the picturesque windmills." (more about it on the blog)

A brilliant place to go for a day out. The 1.8k walk is well worth the effort, good into center and cafe. The only grumble is the tourist info to get there is pretty poor!

Not far from Lisbon, is the Serra de Montejunto, there is hidden a very quiet place, with lots of things to discover. Ideal for weekend getaways or even day trips, have a lot of plant life, food, and beautiful views. To get there you do not need to spend a deposit of your car. The Serra de Montejunto, is to be seen in natural the highest of Estremadura and it comes to 666 m.The Station of biological diversity is at the heart of the mountains, and it is the base to see the butterflies & dragonflies. From here, you can make a circular route through the forest. The caves of the Serra de Montejunto are an important part of the Natural Heritage. There are dozens of caves and pits distributed over the entire area of the Mountain range, with the majority of them small-scale or the vertical, which has, for this reason, a reduced interest for the tourist. Its exploration and study is almost restricted to the experts, due to the difficulties and dangers that are presented to them. For this reason, the visitation, on the part of people who do not master the basic techniques of underground mining should not be carried out in the company of speleologists and duly certified. Many of the animals competing with the human occupation of this privileged position, which he defended from the cold or from predators. For this reason, it is often found in the layers of the earth, in the caves, many remains of animals, some of which are much earlier than the men

Book a room in the neighbourhood and go hiking for a day. The area is small but friendly and green. The mountain is about 600 ms. high and the scenery can change dramatically, depending on the time of day or the weather. There are a few indicated trails.

Montejunto is a less known Mountain near Lisboa that separates the atlantic coast from the Tejo river. From the top you have a huge view if the clouds are not low. Not far from there used to labour an ice factory, who delivered the royal palace, particularly Palacio de Queluz.
