so we were staying in the area and we passed a brown tourist sign showing this station on way to a visit to sherborne. My mother is a huge steam train fan so we stopped for a look around its part of the north dorset railway and infact we were staying in charlton marshall which also was part of the same line and we walked the trailway to spetisbury.Anyway lovely restored station a small museum some rolling stock and we visited the cafe and shop both of which had a lovely log fire going which dried our clothes as the weather was horrible. All the staff we met were friendly and chatty well worth a visit also its free to visit but they welcome donations

I had read a lot of publicity about this place - rebuilding the line 3 miles to Sturminster Newton, running trains, laying track, restoring steam locomotives, running an 08 ex BR shunter locomotive.
What a disappointment. No sign of activity on rebuilding the line, the staff with little knowledge of railways, it seems like a Disneyland - style setup with no experienced staff remotely able to run a railway, let alone provide safe passenger services. I see no hope of this place ever becoming a functioning Heritage Railway.

What a lovely find, a quaint place to visit celebrating 160 years of the station which has seen royalty. A lovely little museum packed with railway memorabilia and the chance to have a cuppa and food in the dining carrage, my son loved this. We had the American carrot cake and it was amazing, so much so I was asked to buy some more to take away for later!

We choose to book the railway carriage to celebrate my husband's birthday. What a good choice it was. Good communication all along with the organiser - steaming hot pasties, lots of hot drinks, wonderful home make cakes as well as a very interesting and informative tour of the signal box and a look at the engine. All of our party thoroughly enjoyed the visit on a cold Saturday in January. Thank you to all the volunteers who made us most welcome. Highly recommended for a visit to anyone with an interest in restoring history and particularly the railways or for the walker who just wants a nice spot to stop for refreshment. Also consider this unusual venue for a celebration - you won't be disappointed!

We visited on a monday in November so the site was closed, apart from some volunteers working on the trackbed nearby. It was still possible to access the site and have a walk around. The station, signal box and other station buildings look smart and have clearly had some good restoration work, there is also track and signals in place and its really looking like a station again. Nice to see, and hopefully we will be back on a day when its open and further restoration has been done.

Charming old station, which needs some support to help it thrive. My grandsons loved it.
Of historical value.

The Poole and Bournemouth MGOC ended our Autumn run at Shillingstone Station. Great parking , tea in an old Railway Coach and a look around the site including a tour of the Signal Box with a talk by a retired Signaller.
I very much recommend a visit and the staff and volunteers are all so friendly.đźš‚

A peaceful place and a testament to the work of the volunteers driving the restoration works, it features beautiful scenery surrounding it while also allowing you to fully appreciate all the love and care that went into taking a decrepit old station building and returning it to working condition, bringing back trains tracks to the location and aiming at making two locomotives track-worthy.

The presence of a cafe makes it a great choice to go and have a break while taking in all the surrounding features and scenario, be it because you are a train or story enthusiast, need a break from walking the North Dorset Trail or simply want to have a pause.
