We love animal encounters and I learned about swimming with sea lions as a fun day trip for us on our last day in Peru. The descriptions below are accurate; very rocky ride (2+ people started throwing up early in the trip on our boat)...More
This was a fantastic experience. The boat tour took some time to and from the island, but the boat was fine and there were room enough. There were only a few penguins at the first island we stopped at, but the at the second Palomino...More
The water was freezing but tbh we were so excited that we kinda forgot about it after a while. Being surrounded by so many sea lions in their natural habitat was absolutely incredible. At first, I wasn't sure what to expect and with how many...More
We've been on similar trips to this and it's easy for them to fall a little short. The boat was steady and dare I say comfortable. The first thing was the birds skimming along the water, then the penguins appear out of nowhere and finally...More
Why around? Because we did a boat tour and when swimming next to the Islands we were surrounded by more than a 100 sea lions, this was crazy to me (in a positive way!). Also discovered the activity with exploor peru by reading alex_tudgeon's review...More

For the summer it really is a nice activity for all the animal-/nature lovers. Not as cold as mentioned on previous reviews (these people obviously didn't do it in summer :)). Booked the tour with exploorperu, as recommended by other, and was very happy with...More
Fantastic! Loved it! Water was freezing and the island really stunk, but still a great experience, for everybody I think. Good snack too, after swimming.
I don´t remember who my guide was, but he was very nice, informative, and helpful. He also took lots of...More

Yeah cheapest tours around 35 USD. They pick you up from the harbour, 2 hours boat journey (they offer you some free pills against sea sickness) and when you arrive the island they stop. You may or may not (it's up to you) pick up one of the diving suits and go near to the sealions with one of the ship staff (or local guide you may call). Including the stop this trip is about 4 hours.

We did it from our cruise ship but we got in a day early (medical issue with one of passengers) so we didn't have luggage issue. I don't think the ship will hold luggage and there is no way to get back to ship once you leave - it is deep inside the port and gate is high security.
There are also no facilities in Callao to hold luggage that I saw. When you get off bus which takes you to gate, it is a mob scene with 100's of "taxi" drivers wanting your business. Callao is also a pretty rough city.
We went with another couple and the driver we picked was great but we were very worried about the safety of getting to where the tour boat leaves from.
I think your best option is to leave luggage at hotel if you're staying overnight or at airport if your flying out later that evening. Note: Airport and hotels are about 30-60 minutes from Callao.
Have a nice trip.
