This site has the remains of a 7th century AD church with 16 granite columns with finely decorated capitals (which are now separated and lie in the sand). Another wonderful Sudanese historical site, well worth visiting.

The holy men's graves of the Muslim cemetery are interesting. Shame the old monastery with Christian paintings is closed by the archeologists for study, but hopefully they will take measures to conserve what remains. You can go up to the fort on the hill, but...More

The setting is great and the landscape, seen from the hill where the Mosque is located, is very beautiful indeed. The old archeological findings and the ruins are not fenced off and cars simply drive on them; as you walk thru the site you get...More
