Since Boppard used to be an important settlement for the Romans on the Middle Rhine, they built a fortification here in the 4th century.
The impressive fort was built near the Rhine, the remains can now still be visited.
Entrance is free.

When walking through Boppard you are not able to miss this. I hoped for a little more though, as you can particularly see the old walls pretty well, but for the rest there is not so much left. The info signs are mostly written in German, not in English (which was not a problem for me, but still). You will probably have seen this in about 10 minutes.

Apparently these are the best remaining Roman walls in Germany. Just this and another section remain, plus one original gate.

Really close to the main square just down a side street. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find this. If you’re in the area, and have time it’s worth a 10 minute stop. It’s free.

Fun to see as part of a visit to this lovely little town. Walls are quite thick and impressive. Makes you wonder a bit about how much that our generation has built will still be standing 1000 years from now.
I would not stop in Boppard just to see these walls but our Uniworld boat tour stopped in Boppard and our guide took us here as part of a walk through the town. Very glad he did.

We have been visiting the Römer Castel many times and it is extremely interesting as it give an insight in the history from ancient Roman time when the empire was large and stretched up to this part of Europe with the igns of Limes as a mark for the North end of the Empire.

Hidden away these truely ancient ruins reflect the long history of Boppard and the surrounding area. Still very visible and easily accessible it's worth taking half an hour to explore what's left of the Roman settlement. It's free and open to visit at anytime. If you're in Boppard or just in the area you must visit the best preserved Roman walls in Germany. An immpressive glimpse of a previous world.

This bit of Roman walls is a 1 minute walk from the markt and worth exploring. The best thing is the single massive block in the one small enclosure. It’s being used as an ashtray by smokers, but it is really the metal joint system used to hold two blocks of stone together and keep them from slipping.

A short walk from where our boat moored we visited these fascinating old ruins as we looked round the beautiful town of Boppard. They are worth looking at as part of a look round but not a "must visit" attraction on their own.

Only with a lot of fantasy this can be called interesting. It probably is for the local archaeologists, but definitively not worth a detour to visit.
