About
Our museum has experienced many changes throughout its over one hundred-year residence in the Electoral Castle. One of the most sweeping changes involved refurbishing and restoring the building. Now complete, the castle and its history have been transformed into one of the main attractions, and have therefore moved into the focus of the exhibition. The City History Section presents excerpts from the history of Boppard in the late Middle Ages and the early modern era. Our extensive collection of the castle’s wooden furnishings also tells the tale of Michael Thonet, one of the city’s famous sons, who started out as a particularly imaginative craftsman and ended up creating a global company. The programme at our museum also includes regular temporary exhibitions and events looking into history and art.

Frankly we wouldn't have visited if it wasn't raining and we had free entry with our guestcard. Many of the town exhibits were only displayed in german, but we found the chair exhibit interesting (yes, really). Best part was the club up the buffet for views over Bullard and the Rhine.

It’s totally worth a visit for its Thonet collection if nothing else. It’s presented beautifully and the building itself is very interesting.
Enjoyed the visit.

The lay out for a small museum is not particularly clear and there was no availability for understanding the pieces in other languages. There was some nice thought behind the wood pieces. Generally and suprisingly it was a little dull maybe another exhibition wont be - not the most welcoming of places

Great small local museum, right on the Rhine. Climb to the top floor for amazing views of the Rhine River, and for that matter in all directions. Not much in English but a small fee for a really nice museum.

We were there in connection with one of our many trips to Boppard and were very eager to see the museum when it opened up a few years ago but unfortunately they did not have so many things to show.

Just down the river from this charming museum, Boppard has a WWII Rhine River crossing marker from the US 3rd Army. The location departing the museum, is following along the Rhine on Rheinalle Street, to the intersection of Gymnasium Street. The marker is set in a stone overlooking the river.

The townscape from the 1700s is worth the price of admission and the building is fun to explore. The museum is just a short walk from the town center. If you enjoy TV shows like "How It's Made", you'll really like the furniture exhibit.

In the middle of the 19th Century, Thonet invented the process for making bentwood furniture. This fascinating museum not only shows some amazing examples of his work but tells the story of his life and explains the process he used. Born in Boppard, he moved to Vienna where his work was more appreciated and exported beautiful pieces around the world particularly to the US. A couple of his catalogues are among the exhibits. Look at the pictures on the website and you will be hooked!
The museum is in a beautiful old building on the banks of the Rhine, worth visiting for itself. After going round the exhibition, we climbed the tower up a winding stone stair (not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties - though the rest of the museum is fully accessible) and found tower rooms with old fireplaces and an ancient fresco.
At the time we were there, there was also a special temporary exhibition about the holocaust.
