Located on the River Main, Miltenberg is notable for the many beautifully preserved half-timbered houses and it is a pleasure to stroll through the Frenconian town with savoring abundance of historic ornaments. To cite a few spots, the Hauptstrasse or the main street, about a mile long, is the centre of attraction with shops, cafes, houses on both sides of the street. The Market Square and the Church of St. James clusters near the fountain which is initially constructed in the 15th century. At the Old City Hall, the Altes Rathaus, there are still marks highlighting different water levels on various flooding incidents from River Main. Last but not the least, the Miltenberg Castle which locates up the hilltop, offers nice birds' eyeview sights over the whole of Miltenberg with the Main Bridge at the centre of the scenery.

A nice day trip to go visit....one of the most scenic trip I have taken via the iCE train from Frankfurt airport. You get to pass through country sides and the river. The town is full of history and it's mainly cobblestone roads...I walked half up to the castle and took amazing pictures...when in town a must go to is..The Reisen Inn, the oldest one in Germany.....kings dined here I read.....the potato soup with bacon was delicious! And of course the local beer. The town was very pretty...I went in the fall in which was a little cold for me...but I suggest to visit in the spring or summer

Miltenberg sits astride theMain River and the now cobblestone road was once the Roman Road. The town is only a few hundred meters back from the riverside and is complete with the exposed beam houses of the 15th and 16 th century. It is a picture perfect opportunity to capture the houses and the hills behind and the carpet of green as a backdrop. There are town squares where witches were burnt during the middle ages and many of the houses are dated and most are restored.Plenty of coffee opportunities and good shops line the streets. A very popular tourist stop for river cruises and bus tours. The town was so charming I did not make the castle but the views from the castle equal those of castle Marksberg. ( my friends told me this)

We were here on our Viking Cruise and debated about the walk up. Our tour guide encouraged us, but my feet and lungs though otherwise. We indeed did make the hike and back down again, slowly, only to hear someone say there is an easier way up & down! The views were spectacular. We did not actually go into the castle -- time was too short. But I am glad I pushed myself to continue the trek.

Another cruise passenger stop-over whilst several locks are negotiated. The town is reasonably interesting, we didn't get into the Castle proper as the included walking tour ended as it was closing. However, if you are able bodied, do walk up the short steep slope to the castle surrounds. From the battlements there are magnificent views of the Maine river in both directions; also a pleasant circular walk back along tree lined paths that brings you back (down another steep slope) into the town square below the castle.

The walk up to the castle was certainly doable. Just stop a few times along the way, and be sure to take a few minutes to catch your breath and enjoy the views. The castle and the grounds are fascinating.

Another overrated attraction in Europe. Long train journey, followed by brief bus trip, then a long walk to the top, with everystep of the way covered in horse manure.
If you did not have tickets for the castle which has never been finished there is another long walk to get above the castle for a photo.
The view down into the valley is glorious. But then you have to walk all the way down again, get another bus and hope you can get a seat on the return train.
Give it a miss, have a look on youtube and enjoy a nice lunch where ever you are staying.

From the market square you can advance upwards towards the ‘Schnatterloch’ where you can visit the city’s museum or walk up even further, either through a gate which leads into a small forest area or steep stairs to your right.
If you take the forest route, just follow the path up until you reach more gate ruins where you turn to the right and then walk up to the castle. From there you have a wonderful view over the city and almost the entire valley.
If you want to go inside, you have to pay an entrance fee, but it's really worth the money as it's lovely inside!

This is a wonderful small town to visit and enjoy strolling along the narrow streets and alleys. Walk the full length of the main street the Hauptstrasse and enjoy some of the major scenic features. The architecture especially around the Market Square is stunning. Take some time to walk up the steep road from the Market Square to reach the old city wall and the castle. There is a superb view from the top looking over the town and the Rhine

The visit caused mixed feelings. The view was incredible and the castle itself, although partly in ruins, promising. However, it acts as a museum of modern art, which is a combination I personally was a bit disappointed with. Sure, there were some really impressive pieces of art, but I just found the castle could be used for something more appropriate and the modern art located elsewhere... But the entrance fee wasn't expensive, so it is worth to pay it just to be able to climb to the tower and have a good look around the town.

We are going on a Christmas cruise next year which includes mittenberg. No idea how long we will be in port but thinking we might skip the markets and climb to the castle for the views. How long does it take up and back? Can you get a clear pic of the town and river without entering or is the view blocked by trees?? I see some great photos but not sure where they are taken from.

The walk to the castle is up a reasonably steep climb but is worth the effort if you wish to get some of those great photos for yourself. The path up to the castle can be taken via steps and pathway starting on the right hand side of the narrow road or, a bit further on, by a more scenic pathway leading off to ther left of the road.
We went up on the scenic pathway and down on the other. Depending on your pace it will take about a half hour to the castle. FYI, we didn't go into the castle as I don't think there is much to see in there, but the best views looking up and down the Main River and over the Town are from the lookout located outside the castle.
Miltemberg is a beautiful town and I would also make time to stroll through it.
