We went here with family (ages 4-61) and we all had a great time.
We didn't have too much luck and only found some vegetation, nothing amazing, but it was still fun. It was the perfect place for our very active boy, who had a blast breaking things with a hammer.
There is a little hut at the entrance where you pay entrance and can rent hammers and chisels for a fee. There is also a restroom and a little station where you can clean the tools.
Just to be aware, it is very dusty and you will get dirty. There are no seats and no sun covers, so some people bring little seats and even little tents or sun shades.

This was our first time fossil hunting in Germany. The place was easily accessible and the layers are easily separated with a hammer and chisel. It is dusty and you will get dirty. There is no shade and the pits do get warm. I recommend bringing a sun shade or a hat for sure. Bring water and food if you plan on staying for a while. Also, thin gloves come in handy. The stone can splinter and you can get small cuts if not careful. Separating the layers was lots of fun and we found lots of small starfish, lesser ammonites and imprints of vegetation. We had a whole pile but we could only keep the a few key pieces. Bringing them home to America was not a problem. If we had more time, we would have visited the other digging sites including Mühlheim and the Museums as well. There will be a "next time".

there are 3 pits of different depths so different eras. It is worth taking a sun shade and something to kneel on. We spent 2 fascinating hours there and would have spent a lot longer if we had a shade. Will go again.

Located a bit outside on Eichstätt on a small hill overseeing the little town with the fortress is this dig site. It demands a small fee (and an additional fee if you are to rent hammer and chisel) but is easily accessible and has a lot of small fossilized starfish, lesser ammonites and rarely some over small remains from the 100 - 190 mio years period. For the larger specimen, it is recommended to go the other dig site "Mühlheim". However here, if you spend one or two hours, it is safe to say that you can find some of the little starfish. However listen to the local people at the cashier. We saw some people messing around with the wrong pieces and not finding anything.
A nuisance are, as unfortunately must be said is quite common know, very badly behaved children. We had one small boy running riots with his hammer and breaking my daughters nice finds. Shame on the parents who even couldn't understand why we complaint about their lack of education! So protect your findings well and stay close by them.
