It's a steep climb from the improvised parking. It was hot and there was nothing to drink in the castle. There is a boring collection about Ice Age to Middle Ages. The fossils looked nice but by that time we just wanted to get out.

Although there are some current renovations going on, this castle has great views from all sides so is definitely worth the hike up! The Jura Museum is housed inside and we love exploring the museum every time we come to Eichstätt.

it was ok the museum. the 2,50 euros if i remember correctly was good for what was exhibited.

what we liked the best was the garden. well kept. the trees, flowers and herb garden descriptions were perfect.

the well which had pumped the water is also worth checking out. i am always impressed from the old mechanism. think about it...this castle they started buiding '1350's. amazing.

We spent an afternoon in the castle. It has two musea. One about fossils, which is great. So many different fossils even from animals in the dinosaur era. They also show fossils from animals that still live today, next to live tanks with these animals. Both our daughters loved it, one being a teenager. Upstairs there is a museum about people in the area from early times till the middle ages. Great collection of archeological founds. Especially the youngest liked this museum as it is a topic she has in school.
We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone with or without kids. Very interesting musea at a great place!

Castle top offer great opportunity to enjoy the view of the town and surrounding area. There is just short walk from the Eichstatt city centre to the top of the hill (approximately 15minutes). I enjoyed cup of coffee on the terrace, especially when it was sunny.

Although there isn't much to see when you arrive at the top of the castle except the very cool Jura Museum, Willibaldsburg is definitely worth the brief hike up the hill. You can see all of Eichstaett on both sides of the castle. Beautiful views and a good workout!

For just a few Euro you can enter the two museums that are contained in the Castle, and explore a bit of the grounds here. Climb up to the top and you get a wonderful view of Eichstatt and the surrounding area. Formidable. The gardens on the east side of the mountain are remarkable, and you can get to those without entering the museum; just drive or walk up the hill, and turn to your right. The Jura Museum is inside the castle, and contains lots of information on fossil finds in the area. A free tour on Sunday at 2:00, but it's only in German.

On top of the mountain where the castle is set, you got a great view over the valley and the town itself.
Recommended for a summer evening where you can take some food/drinks with you and enjoy the nature.

the fortress is high over Eichstätt and features some interesting sights as a viewpoint on one of the two towers and a +75m deep well plus some interesting historics around it. The key reason why we (me and my two kids) think it is a great place to visit is the two museums. One is an fossile, prehistoric museum (jura museum) and the other is a human anthropological museum starting with the early settlements in the Eichstätt area. When we visited it also included a special display for WWI which isn't worth any mentioning. However the jura museum is nicely done and has some really interesting exhibits like a 4m long crocodile. However it is not just the exhibits which are interesting but also all the stories around it plus the tanks with the corals and the Nautilus which are used to explain some of the fossils. A clear 5 star rating and we spend three hours in there. The anthropologic museum is of lesser interest but also explains a bit about the first settlers in the area and has, for example, an old "royal" couple from a local burial site.
Overall, if you are in the area, even if you don't have kids, a must-see!

Visited this castle when staying in Eichstatt and was surprised how good it was. Inexpensive entry and excellent views from the top of the tower after quite a climb up the spiral stairs. The jewel in the crown is the Jura museum which is stocked with many local found fossils and other items presented in an interesting and educational way. The huge tropical fish tank containing corals and exotic fish is very impressive.
If you find the walk up to the castle too difficult you can drive up through an entrance tunnel. Unusually, there is no museum shop.
