I would skip it and visit other sites in the area
Jul 2021
After having read many reviews on multiple different websites and in different brochures highlighting this place as some of the best roman ruins of Provence – it’s even referred to as the French Pompeii. So I decided to visit the place. The archaeological site is split up into two sites separated by a road. I didn’t expect a French Pompeii but hoped for a few well-preserved roman remains. However, the ruins unfortunately didn’t live up to the hype but fell way short of. There is not a lot remaining – a few columns and walls from the houses and those remains aren’t very impressive. Most of them can be seen from the street when walking by. There is a roman theatre, but it was covered in modern equipment for the shows in the evening. The theatre is thus not as impressive as the one in Arles, let alone the one in Orange.
The museum has a few roman statues and two mosaics, however none of the information is written in English so it wasn’t very useful.
If you haven’t visited any roman cities before, this might be worth a visit, but if you have visited Rome, Pompeii, Jerash, or some of the many other impressive roman cities in the world, this is a site you can easily skip. You can instead visit the medieval part of Vaison-la-Romaine, which is amazing. There are many other great roman sites in Provence well worth a visit such as the Theatre of Orange, the Pont du Gard, Nimes, and Arles just to mention a few.
Remember to bring appropriate clothes, it can get very hot in the summer and there is no wind which makes it fell even warmer.

Nice, but ..

The archeological site is very nice.. we could do two sites and the museum in 3-4 hours.. It could have been a very nice experience but they did not have audio guides because of COVID19. A bit of a shame since other musea do take the time to clean.. On top of that, there were no booklets in dutch for our kids to follow do the puzzle (which is keeping them occupied). Although there is some explanation on a couple of boards this is not enough to really get the feeling for this very impressive site. Really a shame... But outside COVID time or take a guide (only at restricted timeslots) this is a great place to go. Do not go on Tuesdays.. it is market and it is almost impossible to find a parking spot.....

So interesting

How a town undercovered another ancient town. The ruins are in nice shape to show you the outline of the buildings when they were built. Impressive inside this beautiful French town. A great mix of the old and the very old. Worth a visit.

Stunning ruins

Give yourself a whole day to explore both Roman sites and museum, then there's the medieval part of town which we didn't have time for. It is called a mini Pompeii and that seems an accurate description. The excavations of the houses and street are fantastic. The audio guide in English is excellent and the museum is well done - all part of your ticket - and it preserves statues found when excavating. The site is vast and in 30 degree C heat it was quite an achievement for us but we wouldn't have missed it! Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. You get a real feel for how the Romans lived in this area. Don't forget the church and cloisters. The church is plain and quite dark but the cloisters are delightful with amazing carvings on the pillars.

Impressive

For 9 euros (less for children), you get access to a lot of roman ruins plus the amphitheater and museum. It was also interesting to learn about the origins of Vaison la Romaine and surrounding area. Ticket office/entrance at Le Site de Puymin. Would recommend.

A very large site. Quite impressive

We know they were Roman sites here but did not think they were this large. It’s only nine euros to have access to both sites and the museum. Your ticket is good for 24 hours. They give you a code for one of the other sites so you can gain admittance. The museum is very well done with a good English guide and a film that will give you an overview of the area. We were quite impressed with the whole operation. We loved it❤️

Huge Site full of Roman Ruins

Everything from Roman toilets to the amphitheater, though the amphitheater is mostly restored at this point. Audio guide takes you through the entirety of the sites with great information.

Excellently preserved and curated archaeological site from Roman times
Mar 2019 • Couples
Fascinating trip back in time to some of the more luxurious houses of the period. The site is easily traversed on the walkways provided. We had a professional guide to explain what all the different structures were. Not sure if audio guide is available for those without a guide. There is an admission charge.

Good Example of Roman Ruins
Jan 2019 • Friends
As with the area this is one example of Roman ruins. Interesting in that when originally being restored they tried to recreate the to the original so you can see where they rebuilt the columns. Fortunately there was a change in philosophy and the ruins have been left as is.

Roman ruins in the center of Vaison-la-Romain
Sep 2018 • Couples
The Roman ruins in Vaison-la-Romaine are centrally located. No need to pay an admission to visit inside the gate ~ the view from the sidewalk was perfect.
