For those who are good riders and respect nature and the local environment this is the place to go. Did the Randonnée Radeaux which was roughly 5 to 6 hours of amazing cross terrain riding with a picnic lunch stop on the beach. Joel and Patty did an excellent job of selecting the right ride (the horses are well loved and cared for) and making sure we were well fed and watered. Highly recommend as a riding experience and delightful way to explore the magic of the Camargue. Not for the inexperienced.

This establishment will NOT let you ride if you weigh more than 85 kilos or measure more than 180 cm. Without doubt because they have exclusively camarguais horses that cannot handle larger people. Still feels like “fat-shaming” though and should be clearly marked in the advertising

We love coming here to enjoy the beautiful Camargue scenery on the family of horses that call La Marisma their home. Patty’s warmth and hospitality is second to none and Joel’s guidance is always very professional. I recommend a ride here without hesitation!

I booked a ride with my 3 children and had the worst experience ever. The horses are not suited for children. We were 2 good riders and 2 beginners. The reassured us that the horses were ok but no!
I went on a canter with my daughter and the two other kids stayed with Joel. Then all went wrong my son's horse ran away in the opposite direction, the other followed. I walked back with my daughter and my horse went crazy. I fell, my last kid went down, I held her horse who was getting nervous. I tried to calm him down but the raised and hit me with his hoove on the chin.
I have been around proper horses for 7 years and never got hit like that. Those horses are not right in their head and can bear to be separated, they do not work independently. A disaster, the kids were terrified.
It is very expensive for a never again experience. They didn't even offer a discount :-(

First visit was in 2009, with my sister who, like myself, is an experienced rider. A 2 hour trip with Joel and another experienced rider so we rode along in a good pace! Was great fun and we had some good stretches of gallop :D
Horses were very sweet, fast but knew exactly where to stop (which is nice when you don't know the area and you don't necessarily ride with Joel at the front which makes it even less of a touristy experience!)
Fast forward to 2017 and I'm back I'm Camargue, this time with my boyfriend who have never really been on a horse. They got him a very sweet horse and I got the same horse which I rode in 2009! Emu (my horse) was now 22, but not any slower or less interested in trekking - this just shows that this stable takes good care of their horses! My boyfriends horse was 18 but also fit as a fiddle, however much more suited for beginners than mine. It was a good fit, for both of us :)
This trip was less action than 2009 as we rode out with 2 other couples, a young girl and her father, none of which being very experienced. I had the possibility to take two gallops on my own while the others followed in trot or walk - a good balance for the experienced vs the less experienced I think.
Joel does not speak much English so we got very little out of his stories but we didn't care about that. On these trips you don't ride in one long column but are encouraged to ride two and two so you can e.g. chat with your partner while enjoying the scenic.
On our 2 hour trip we passed other stables, horses, bulls and Le Petit Rhone. No flamingos but I suspect they don't live in that area.
Only the young daughter speaks English and we were quite lucky that she was there when we went to book. On the day itself she wasn't around but it wasn't a big problem, I think, to communicate. I know very little French which helped. Another guy in the group could speak a little English which was convenient for the more important messages but I'm sure we would have figured it out nonetheless :)
Helmets are provided but not mandatory. They have those stirrups which your foot can't go through so you don't have to worry if you don't have shoes with heels with you.
Next time I'm visiting Camargue I will go horseback riding here again - probably Emu is still alive by then!

We spent the most incredible day with Joel and Patty and their horses. Highlights included galloping along a deserted beach with just flamingos for company and beautiful scenery and bird life. We found our hosts to be informative, professonal and charming and they imparted their love for their region over a delicious picnic, complete with local rosé! The horses had a great temperament, they were responsive and eager. This place is special.

We booked at La Marisma with a lot of apprehension. The reviews were so good that it was hard to believe!
Now I have to say that they are all true. Don’t expect the usual touristic approach though. Patty and Joel are breeders, not TAs. They will show you the area, explain how to treat the horses but rough on the edges, if you see what I mean… Joel will be hard on you if you don’t follow his advice or mistreat the horse in any way. But that’s what we were looking for: authentic. They even improvise some food and drinks after the ride, including family pictures and tips for the region!
The experience on its own was amazing. They know their horses pretty well which means that they found the best horse for every type of rider. We had a first time rider in the group who managed to gallop several times! The itinerary was great, you could see wild bulls, birds, other horses… no flamingoes though (you have to go to the parc ornithologique for that). But the important thing for me is that you felt free on the horse, not forced to wear helmets (although they are available if you want), not forced to go in line one after the other… And the Carmarguese saddle is very comfortable :)
While I highly recommend this experience, please note 2 important points:
- They don’t speak English. So someone in the group at least must speak French (or eventually Spanish) and then act as the translator.
- We paid 55 EUR each for the 3 hour ride. Since we were a group of 5, we asked for the price if we were alone… they had said we would be. Wasn’t true, 2 more people were added. This did not hinder our experience at all. However, if you really want to be alone, please expect to explain and negotiate in advance!
We are certainly coming back!

The owners seemed nice, but hardly spoke any english which was challenging. The horses looked fine, but were used to tourists and didn't respond very well. We did do galop 3 times, which was nice. The route through the Camarque was fine, however we suspect that there are nicer routes with more beautiful nature.

What a beautiful experience! Joel et Patty are not just running a business they live a passion and we lived it too with them for over 2 hours. They passed onto my children their love of the Camargue and their horses, a wonderful educational time for them. By far this is THE experience to live when visiting Saintes Maries de la Mer!
