The French submarine Espadon ("swordfish" in French) is open to visitors inside the fortified lock of the harbour of Saint-Nazaire. This 78-m long submarine was built in Le Havre and launched in 1958 before taking up service in 1960. During its 25 year long career, the Espadon covered 360,547 nautical miles, i.e. the equivalent of 17 times the circumference of the earth! Welcome for an audioguided tour, available in French, English, German and Spanish.

I went over half a century without setting foot in a submarine and then have been in two in two months. The previous was at Chatham dockyard in Kent, England and that was a guided tour. This is a self-guided tour with an audio guide...More

Visitied this place and it is facinating to see how people lived on the submarine for months on end. There is an audio guide that everyone gets and you need it really to understand what is going on. The space inside is quite cramped and...More

This process could easily be re-engineered to make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. The submarine itself was very interesting and the audioguide was very informative. The French submarine service is a fairly uneventful story. A retired Nazi U boat would be a more fitting...More

I have to admit, I was always interested, but as a female, this floats my boat less than my partner (excuse the pun) who is very interested in the history of u-boats. So on out tour around France, this was a stop we had to...More

We toured the Espadon, (part of our combined ticket to three museums), the submarine built in the 1960s that journeyed beneath the polar ice cap - multi-media handset in English - fascinating and just a little scary. Great for all ages.

I'm sorry to say that this museum was very disappointing. We were waiting for ages at the ticket desk because they were busy recharging and recycling audio guides, I actually felt that they could have saved all that bother by just providing people with a...More

How folk lived aboard these things is amazing. We stayed on an extra night just to go aboard. Well worth a visit.

Very interesting for both adults as well as older children. Good audio guide. Highly recommended. We had to wait in the line for a while because max. 65 people are allowed in at a time.

Visit of L'Espadon is very interesting for almost anyone but for those interested in military history is great, great, great. You do not need a guide as the audioguide is excellent so you can vist it by yourselves. If you like the experience and if...More

The audio guide is easy to use and comes free with the tour. The layout of the sub is great for the tour and gives you a real idea of what it was like whilst in use.
