The chateau was once the home of James II who retired here after his defeat and dethronement by William of Orange in 1690. It is now a fine museum of archaeology.

There is free entry to the beautiful and impressive forecourt and the chapel. Highly recommended, particularly for those on a budget on time and finances.

First of all you have the building and grounds. Outstanding condition of both. Then you have the vast collection of items and the excellent method in which they are displayed. If you are an English only speaker then the written word is very limited. Once...More

Nice archeological museum, situated in the outskirts of Paris, but easily accessible with RER A. The museum is in a great historic setting, the building being a former royal palace. There are extensive information panels (though most in French only) and exhibits from prehistory to...More

This is a good alternative to avoiding queues at Versailles - the park is beautiful and the old town centre of Saint Germain is delightful.

The chateau has undergone an extensive refurbishment and the exterior and courtyard look splendid. There are a large number of exhibits, but more explanations and information would be welcome. A whole section of the museum was closed off, no mention of that had been made...More

If you want to run in Saint Germain en Laye there’s only one place: the park behind the chateau. There’s a long Terrace overlooking western Paris, plenty of shaded paths beneath trimmed trees and an infinity of single-track trails in the huge forest nearby. Check...More
