Walking through the medieval city and reaching the top of the hill you will find the "Chateau des Ducs de Bourbon" in the compound. The castle was closed during our visit but just stroll around the compound as there are many things of interest, including the view of the city.

After a long climb up the stairs, the chateau is closed, the views are not brilliant. You have to make your way through lots of vagrants at the bottom of the stairs.

Oh my goodness, what a climb up the stairs! A lot of stairs, but once at the top (and having caught your breath) the views out over Montlucon are stunning.
You can only walk round the exterior of the Chateau but the architecture is beautiful.
Well worth a visit and the walk up the stairs!

We really enjoyed our stay in Montlucon, it was full of delightful surprises including beautiful formal gardens, the Chateau des Ducs and medieval houses in the centre of town. Why this place is not a tourist draw card is a mystery to me as we absolutely revelled in the hidden beauty of the place.

Looks lovely from the outside but was closed despite opening times board indicating it should be open.
Steps up to it clearly used as a pissoire as they stunk.
Lots of empty beer bottles around and quite a few questionable characters hanging around the terraces.

Super place to visit for the views over the surrounding areas of the town. Beautiful building the was sacked by the English during the 100 Years war.
