There was no signs on the door telling us what the building was, so we dropped in really by chance. The fountain inside was very beautiful. The room is hexagonally shaped, which I think was very charming. The cathedral turned out to be closed for renovation...More

It looks fascinating from the outside, but inside it is dark and a bit of a mess. The baptismal font looks interesting, but this is one attraction you need not bother with.

Baptistery of San Giovanni is an octagonal building built in the 13th century across the Cathedral (which is currently closed for renovation). Only the front side is made of green and white marble with a rounded arch as the main portal. It is a peaceful...More

The octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni dates back to the 13th century and looks a bit like a smaller version of baptisteries in for instance Florance and Pisa. It's opposite the cathedral (which is currently under restoration). Only one of the sides has been furnished...More

There are so many baptisteries in the area and, although this one is smaller than many, it is well worth a visit. It is right next door to the Cathedral which was closed for internal and external restoration when we were in the town. The...More

A beautiful octagonal shaped church with some nice interiors. Peaceful. Worth a visit and sitting to view and contemplate.

Beautiful small baptistery and easy to see. When seeing the historical site in Volterra this is one not to miss. It's octagonal shape is faced with green and white marble on one side only, a bit different.

We were there when it was "in restauro" getting pimped up for the Jubilee Year (2000). A group of three or four students, Dutch I think, in town for a choral competition, came in and just walked around skatting - the remarkable acoustics made art...More

Near the cathedral, the Baptistery is worth a quick look. The exterior is clearly seen when approaching Volterra. The interior is sparsely decorated but nicely. It has a cool and peaceful feel. Please show respect and be quiet when inside.

Building sits across from Duomo. Only one of the sides has green and white marble. Green/white marble was a feature of Pisano buildings but this one probably designed by a follower of his. Above Baptismal font is statue of St. John the Baptist, very symbolic....More
