the Garden in front of the Villa

Liguria, protected from the north by the Alps, is known for its mild climate and proof of it is the subtropical and tropical vegetation in its gardens. The most famous are no doubt the Hanbury Gardens in Ventimiglia, close to the French border. But Sanremo doesn't lack gardens either and probably the best to visit here are the Giardini Ormond by the villa of that name. Originally part of the property of Swiss tobacco merchant Michel Louis Ormond the park later was split in two by the Corso Cavallotti with the lower part now often being called 'Giardini Nobel', since Alfred Nobel had his villa just next to it. There is a separate entry at Tripadvisor for the 'Giardini Nobel'. To get to the Giardini Ormond north of the Corso one passes the little 'Flori Caffé'. The Villa Ormond, now like the gardens belonging to the municipality of Sanremo, can be seen further up. To wander through the park makes for a pleasant and relaxing break with all the exotic plants, especially many kind of palm trees. Some plants and trees are labeled like a Nandina, also called a Sacred Bamboo, although it is from the Barberry family. An impressive tree is the Australian Moreton Fig Bay (Ficus macrophylla). In the middle is a small pond with turtles in it. With their yellow cheeks they are discernible as Yellow-bellied Sliders from the US southeast, a popular pet. There are also information boards on gardeners that have contributed to the Giardini like Ludwig Winter from Heidelberg, the designer of the Hanbury Gardens. Another information board is for Hermann Stern from Basel, a gardener, who spent most of his life in Sanremo. Visitors, who have seen the 'Primavera' statue at the Corso della Imperatrice in the western part of town will be surprised to find here a quite similar marble statue, representing Dea Flora, the goddess of the flowers, also a work by Tuscan sculptor Vincenzo Pasquali.

The gardens are a good walk from Sanremo town centre and we got a taxi from the Royal hotel - cost us 9 euros.

Admittance is free and they seem to be split into two sections with the main road running in between. It wasn't clear whether Villa Ormond itself, in the upper half of the gardens, was open to the public but we went simply for the gardens. I have to say we found them very disappointing indeed and way below the standard of other gardens we have seen in Italy.

They weren't very well maintained but if you are a palm tree fan then may be you would like them. Not much colour and no bedding plants. The lower section, across the road was very similar but at least had a fountain although graffiti here was a negative.

If you have time constraints I wouldn't bother visiting - sorry to say a really disappointing experience.

I can see this place as a heart of Sanremo but it is clearly not getting enough of attention from the local government- not enough watering, cleaning the fontain, cutting palm trees. It is probably the prettiest park in the town.

Nice place to visit but a little run down. Good on a hot day as plenty of shelter and interesting plants and trees.
