The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

Undoubtedly one of the best views of the lake. Quite and tranquil to absorb the views and serenity of the lake! It’s a steep climb but well worth the rewards of the views of the river.

Bit of a slog up on a hot day, but fabulous views from the top worth every step. Pleasant terrace cafe bar an extra incentive to reach the top.

A good steady walk up to the Bastion provides you with wonderful views over Riva and across Lake Garda. Well worth the effort! A nice little café at the Bastion is the icing on the cake.

If you have some time to visit and have great view the Bastion... take the opportunity. You could have a refresher at the restaurant and nice view to Riva del Garde and the cirrandings for example the historic city Arco. It was a good experience...More

We walked up the hill to the baton on a hot day but were thrilled to find it was really worth the effort. Amazing views Riva Del Garda and the lake with hundreds of boats and windsurfers playing to their heat's content. A very worthwhile...More

Great heart pumping walk, then a brilliant view recovering with a cool beer and lunch! Also crawl over the tower itself, ransacked by Napoleon, - who else?

It is a nice climb from the center: about 1km, with 130m ascent. There are excellent views to town and lake. The castle itself is not a reason to climb up. There is a nice restaurant with views.

Yes but it would not be easy. It is quite a long way and parts of it are steep.
