The view from the Apollo’s temple over the coast are astonishing especially in the benign sunlight of this spring noon
May 2019
On the flank of the ancient acropolis above the coast, the metalled road goes directly to the entrance. But on info from our guide at Matera, we went 200 metres from the turn, crossed a field on the right of an insubstantial remains of a temple and then followed the Cripta Romana, the impressive tunnel which cuts through the hill from east to west. A gallery, over 130 metres long was cut through thr soft tufa. This is lit by windows looking out to sea. There care subsidiary arms to the gallery, at the end is where Sibyl made her oracular pronouncements. A road with roman paving leads up to the Temple of Apollo from where the views of the coast are astonishing, not least in the benign sunlight of spring afternoon

Interesting but
Sep 2018 • Couples
The cave is not the most interesting part of the site and it probably was not the site of the Sibyl's cave. However, it is one of a number of interesting structures - including tunnels - that were built so long ago and are unlike others of their time. What was their true use?

Did you know that Odysseus walked these halls?
Aug 2017 • Family
It was rumored that Odysseus sought the Sybil's advice on one occasion. Just think... walking down the same corridor where Odysseus once walked. No telling who else went down that passage. I got to sit in the very spot she sat...

Beautiful
Apr 2018 • Friends
I love the history surrounding the cave and found it fun to walk down the long passage to the cave. There are openings all the way which let the light through making for very nice pictures. After a hot walk outside it was nice to walk in the cool cave. There are very few other people which make for a good experience

Long, trapezoidal passageway
Jul 2017 • Family
I like legendary sites, but this long, straight passageway to a room at the end is hardly breathtaking. You can get in, and you can walk it to the end. It is a small part of the overall site, which is worth visiting and has some interesting ruins.

A fast but short trip to see this and can be done in under a hour. It was great listening to the history and the story of the Sibyl.

What an odd shaped thingy
Oct 2016 • Couples
Very odd shaped or constructed thingy. Not sure what it was other than an odd shaped tunnel.
Sit where the oracle sat - ok we did that too.
Visit again - no, boring so don't bother!
