Picturesque place with plenty of sites (free entry!) Loved walking around the town. Much more interesting than the cinque terre towns. Perhaps I was lucky to have visited when there weren’t many tourists!

We were advised by our receptionist at our hotel in Monterosso to visit Porto Venere. Turned out to probably be more appealing than Cinque Terre. Fabulous bays, great bars/restaurants and a quaint, yet classy shopping street/alley - not selling the "tat" found in some of...More

For me this area counts as a must see when visiting La Spezia. The buildings are set against the hillside in a quaint artistic layout - beautiful. Lots of little shops and restaurants to visit.

The town is definitely nice and picturesque but is totally overcrowded with tourists. It is impossible to park and the ferries bring in so many additional tourists that the town is difficult to navigate. We preferred Lerici which is a town nearby that is a...More

Everything about this place was amazing. Less crowds and tourists to compete with. Beautiful water, city and surrounding landscapes. Amazing views from the castle on top. Strongly suggest that anyone visiting the Cinque Terre spend a day here. We took the Ferry from La Spezia...More

This town offers narrow charming streets with interesting shops eg Via Capellini where there are also many bars and restaurants. You can walk through this street to historical churches on the cliff where you can view the sometimes turbulent Mediterranean crash against the rocks, especially...More

Portovenere is a picturesque town by the sea - we went in July and although there were quite a few tourists it didn't seem as busy as some of the other Cinque Terre towns. From the harbour area you should walk through the archway into...More

Decided to stop here on our way from Tuscany to Torino. To do that, it is a bit out of the way but rewarded with beautiful sea views. Pretty crowded and parking was a real problem. Streets become one way and we had to circle...More

Eletra is also good, reasonable but more expensive than El Gabbiano. If you go to Fezzano which is a town near Portovenere don't miss La Bitta the best! More expensive but a gastronomic delight!

I have to disagree with those that told you go via Genova. More congested and delays likely! Many more accidents also go via Parma...

Sorry I just saw this post. We took a boat from Monterosso to Portovenere. I believe it was around $33 euros and took about an hour and a half to go from Monterosso to Portovenere. It seems like a long time, but the view... More
