This 16th century palazzo isn’t a must-see but you will walk past it if you are exploring the main corso in Montepulciano. It’s one of the many grand palace-like homes along the corso. It’s easily identified because it has a modern gold name-plate beside the door.
What caught our eye was the heavy stone Romeo and Juliet style balcony at the front, above the main door.
Looking more closely, we could see a series of crescent moons, stars and small star clusters. These were the heraldic symbols of the original owners, the Gagnoni family. Rich landowners with estates at Montepulciano and near Siena, they must have been doing well because their family home is a large and solid piece of real estate.
It stayed in the family for centuries but was bought by the Grugni family in the 19th century. Today, it is owned and protected by the state.
