We did couple of boat trips from Malcesine. First was a €20 hop on hop off north lake ticket to visit Limone and Riva. Boats are regular and we always got a seat. Well worth the price and we had a great day out. We loved Limone so much our second trip was the Market day special offer of €7 return ticket and we had a beach day at Limone.

This is a super way to travel. From the lake you notice things along the way, the lemon trees en route to Limone, the different shades of the mountains when the sun shines, the early morning mist. The way the engineers drilled through the mountain so that tourists can travel by bike, and cycling is huge in the Lake Garda region.
You get off at the little jetty, stretch your legs of sit and order a coffee or vino and watch the world.

We took the ferry to Limone as a part of an unplanned afternoon. It was an easy trip to make and our biggest mistake is that we didn't go until after 1300. The ferry was clean, on time and very pleasant. Limone was a nice complement to Malcesine and we plan on going back before we return to the states.

Wonderful way to view the different towns along the lake. Riva is a large town with lots of shops and restaurants. Malcesine is smaller with winding streets, Limone is smaller again but very pretty, even with the large number of tourist.
The ferry is a must.

Ferries are the best way to travel on Italian lakes. They are not expensive and the views you get are amazing. However, we faced an issue that I would like to point out so that other travellers can take their precautions.

We booked took a two way ticket from Desenzano to Simione. The island is breathtaking and I would highly recommend. After having spent the day there, we went back to the Jetty for our trip back to Simione which should have taken 15mins. We had a 3 yr old and had to catch a train back to Milan.

On the Jetty we saw a Ferry coming and asked him if it was going to Desenzano and he said Yes. We got in the Ferry and showed our ticket to the man controlling tickets and all was good.

However, after 20mins of sailing we started realising that the trip was taking longer than the 15mins to Desenzano. We asked someone on the boat and he said that the Ferry was going to Garda. To note that Garda is very far from Simione. When we asked how we are supposed to get back to Desenzano, thy said that the only option is to stay on the boat for a full trip to Garda, then back to a town called lazie, then take another ferry back to Simione...a total of 2hours of sailing. This was very frustating for us as the additional 2 hours would completely affect the schedule of our 3 yr old but we had no choice.

Instead of Helping out, the boat staff told us that we had to pay for the full trip and on tp of that we had to pay a fine for travelling without the proper ticket.

This was insane. We told them that it was their fault and that they told us to get into the boat but they treated us like it was our fault. In the end we paid the price and we did not want to further delay our return.

So my message is be sure to verify on which ferry you are getting on and dont expect much help from the staff, specially if you are not local
