A beautiful entrance to the city, it was erected as a monument to Charles V who protected and increased the defences of Lecce. We took a 'Little Train Tour' with an audio guide which takes in all the sights of the city and gives you...More

A more recent addition to the architecture of Lecce, situated strikingly where most guided tours of the city commence. Interesting carving of coats of arms, and a great starting point.

The Porta Napoli is a rather unique building in Lecce, erected in honour of the Hasburg Emperor Charles V. It has elements of barroque architecture with bas reliefs on one facade, while the other is rather barren. An impressive piece of architecture to admire from...More

This beautiful gate to Lecce is a wonderful example of the city's historical architecture in the local stone. It is also a good meeting point, particularly as you can drive right to it on the Piazzetta Arco di Trionfo, and pedestrians can wait there under...More

This was our way into the city from our hotel.....carefully around the obelisk avoiding the stream of cars and bikes on the busy inner-ring.....then through thus imposing arch. Then this ancient city is yours to walk. Enjoy!

Lecce is one of the most beautiful cities in Puglia. Plenty of small streets, churches, mix of culture, this is a city you must go.

1. The clear and monumental proportions are impressive, particularly on the inside of the gate. The outside is more fancy, but still impressive. 2. Spend an hour at the bar just inside the gate and enjoy the tranquility of this place.

Huge door with the arms of Charles V Emperor, the door is a massive example of XVI century civil architecture which anticipates the richness of the inside historial center.

Porta Napoli was the starting point for our group's week in Apulia while there to enjoy The Awaiting Table Cookery School (see separate review). Pictures here feature our walking through the nearby streets of Lecce.

This arch was built in 1548 and had the name 'Arch of triumph" to celebrate the coming of Emporer Charles V and it was later named Napoli Gateway. It leads out of the old town through a park lined with flowering Oleander trees.
