This was our way into the city from our hotel.....carefully around the obelisk avoiding the stream of cars and bikes on the busy inner-ring.....then through thus imposing arch. Then this ancient city is yours to walk. Enjoy!

Lecce is one of the most beautiful cities in Puglia. Plenty of small streets, churches, mix of culture, this is a city you must go.

1. The clear and monumental proportions are impressive, particularly on the inside of the gate. The outside is more fancy, but still impressive. 2. Spend an hour at the bar just inside the gate and enjoy the tranquility of this place.

Huge door with the arms of Charles V Emperor, the door is a massive example of XVI century civil architecture which anticipates the richness of the inside historial center.

Porta Napoli was the starting point for our group's week in Apulia while there to enjoy The Awaiting Table Cookery School (see separate review). Pictures here feature our walking through the nearby streets of Lecce.

This arch was built in 1548 and had the name 'Arch of triumph" to celebrate the coming of Emporer Charles V and it was later named Napoli Gateway. It leads out of the old town through a park lined with flowering Oleander trees.

The most impressive of Lecce city gates, Porta Napoli was built in 16th century as a triumphal arch. Nowadays it still overwhelms visitors with its grandeur, especially when lit up at night. Do not miss that sight when in Lecce.

Beautiful 16th century arch of triumph that carries the Napoli name as the road leading to Naples started there.

One of the beautiful assets of the Centro Antico is that it's boundary is marked by portals, Napoli being the grandest. As such, it can be a landmark to keep your wandering of the Storico from straying. Also a good place to stop on a...More
