Piazza Leandra
Nov 2019
Piazza Leandra is not big, but is the oldest square in Civitavechia, we were there around 3 pm and there was nothing going on, nobody was there just us. We saw the Medieval fountain still working but it needed a good clean up, there is another Piazza Aurelio Saffi just next to this one, there is a unique old city gate still using as a passage to Piazza Leandra. It was an interesting place to visit. Happy Travelling!

Typical relaxing space near the old city walls.
Nov 2019 • Couples
On the way from the old port buildings towards the Central Market area. Like most piazzas it is a little oasis of calm with water feature.

Typical small piazza
May 2019 • Couples
Pretty enough little piazza, connected to Piazza Safi by the Porta dell’Archetto, interesting in itself.

Unfortunately the Church of the Star was closed when we were there.

Vatican Heliodorus room in Civitavecchia !
Nov 2018 • Friends
In 1972, a retired carabiniere bought an apartment in Civitavecchia.
During the renovation, under the plaster he discovered wall paintings that are a copy of the frescoes of the room of Heliodorus in the Vatican.
Since years, scholars have been discussing whether they are a copy of the Vatican frescoes or a test essay before executing frescoes in the Vatican.
My opinion is that just look at the sky of the painting "The
Mass of Bolsena" in Civitavecchia is sufficient to realize that it can not be a copy of the homonymous fresco done in the Vatican.
Whatever your opinion can be, I recommend you going to see these paintings.
I hope that the City of Civitavecchia will create a civic Museum including the paintings of Piazza Leandra, n. 2, of which I spoke now and the Terme Taurine complex.

By Chance
Nov 2018 • Couples
We found this by chance when we were walking to the market. It is a gate that is part of the old walled city.

This is in the centre of town between two squares. It is an amazing thick wall and is different on each side

Very pretty square
Jun 2018 • Couples
This arch connects two pretty squares in the old city. Both have bars and trattorias. There are also an impressive oratory, and a small shrine to the Madonna which is charming.

A picturesque site
Apr 2018 • Couples
The oldest square in the city, surrounded by the typical Medieval district, is a very picturesque site with an interesting history. The old legend has it that the old sailor named Leonardo managed to convince his fellow citizens to return to the old city of Centumcellae instead of building a new city on the hill, after the Sarracen invasion in the 9th century. The city was rebuilt and renamed to Civitas Vetula (or Civitavecchia).

You don't need a reason to be here
Sep 2017 • Couples
We went walkies and not far from where we docked, actually it's not far from the fortress, which we did not have time to see. We ended up in this piazza and we found out later that it's one of the oldest in town. In my last blog I would have told you that where I'm from they knock down the old to build the new. Very similar here but they have done it in a way that preserves the historic value of the area. I took a photo similar to the one above but my wife is standing in the entrance.(Don't ask me to download the photo). There is a plaque on the left hand side and basically says it was restored in 1987 I have not translated the top half but it seems it was put there in1966.

It seems to be something about an invasion that may have occurred in 810AD. Cant find a translation as yet . Maybe someone can help.

Anyway we decided to walk through the gate and it felt like we were in medieval times. You will have to go have a look for yourselves. There were some restaurants in the area. We followed the massive wall around and walked back to where we embarked. Fantastic place.
It's the port for Rome as you probably know but it's worth staying a day and explore.

Nice quiet place in the centre of Civitavecchia. Just a little walk from the Michelangelo fortress. Nice restaurants in this neighbourhood
